A couple of years ago, I discovered pop up cards and sliceforms. I've been doing some since then, but this is my first sliceform I turn into a pop up card. I came with the idea of a winged pig a couple of weeks ago when I was thinking about impossible things.

In this instructable, I show you how to assemble the pig and the pop up card. You can either cut it with a craft knife or using a cutting machine in case you have one.

Step 1: Materials

You will need:

For the pig: 3 sheets of cardstock paper (80 lb /210 gsm). The color is your choice.

For the card: 1 sheet of cardstock paper

Some spare cardstock

A 45° triangle

A craft knife or a cutting machine with any software that opens svg files (silhouette studio designer edition, make the cut, etc)

Glue

A pencil

A embossing tool or a pen with no ink

Step 2: Cut the Pig Pieces

To cut the pieces, you can either use a knife kraft or a cutting machine

By hand:

Print the PDF templates provided and cut the pieces using a kraft knife. For good results, make sure the blade is sharp.

By using a cutting machine:

Open the SVG file provided and cut the pieces with your machine.

There are two pieces that have tabs; identify them and using your embossing tool or a pen with no ink, mark a line on each tab (there are four tabs in total). Fold and unfold

Tip: Since several pieces look alike, I recommend to write the piece number on each one. Write the number on the center of the piece, no one will notice the numbers once the pig is fully assembled.

Step 3: Assembling the Pig

Once you finish to cut all the pieces, it is time to put it together

TIP: If the cardstock is the right one, you will not need glue. However, if the slots are wider than the cardstock, some pieces may tend to fall. To fix that, carefully put a small drop of glue on the slot, then slide the piece on its place and let it dry before you fold it flat.

Step 4: Assembling the Card

Fold the sheet in half

Using your 45° triangle, draw a line with your pencil as shown.

Fold your pig. It is important that the tabs are one on top of the other, otherwise the card wont work. The pictures show the right and wrong alignment. If your tabs are not on top of the other, simply fold your pig to the other side, that will correct the tab position.

Spread a small amount of glue on the tabs shown. Glue your pig to the card. The lines you marked in the tabs, must align with the line you draw on your sheet.

If at this point, you notice that the wing of the pig is showing outside the card, use some spare cardstock and glue it to the edges of the sheet to make it wider.

Spread a small amount of glue on the remaing tabs. Close the card, press a little bit and allow the glue to dry. This is very important, if you open the card before the glue dries, you will not have good results, be patient!!

Open carefully and enjoy!!

Step 5: How I Designed the Sliceform

To explain on detail how I designed the sliceform is not the purpose of this instructable, however if you are wondering how I did it, here is the overall process:

I downloaded a 3D pig model and wings from here: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:66244 and here http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:603053

Then, using 123D design I merged the wings to the pig and sent it to 123D Make to create the raw sliceform

Then, I converted the files to SVG using Scribus and cleaned the sliceform

Finally using Make the Cut I created the final files I'm sharing with you.
