This is an ornament I designed to be 3D Printed for the 2014 White House Tree. I used Adobe Illustrator, Shapeways, NetFabb, and Makerware to create a 3D print with a Replicator 2. It takes 20 minutes to print.

Step 1: STEP 1:

Open a new drawing in Adobe Illustrator. I used an 8X11 size sheet and named it.

Step 2: STEP 2:

I found an image online, copied and pasted it into Illustrator and then did an "Image Trace."

Step 3: STEP 3:

Then I hit "Expand" to break the image into pieces.

Step 4: STEP 4:

I then chose the "Direct Selection" tool and clicked on the white of the pic and deleted that out so that it would not get in the way later. The white part is not needed for the object.

Step 5: STEP 5:

Then, I went to the shape tool and chose the star tool. I clicked and dragged the star out and as I was doing this, I clicked the down arrow on my keyboard to make only 4 points instead of 5. I dragged it out to what I thought was a good size, changed the inside of the star to the empty choice on the colors and then gave it a black border. I made the border a size of 15 pt.

Step 6: STEP 6:

I moved my object on top of the Obama Change symbol and adjusted it to fit the symbol with no spaces. I also drew out a new 4 pt star in the opposite direction.

Step 7: STEP 7:

I moved the new star on top of the other and adjusted the points using the "Direct Selection" tool. I added a circle to the top for the hook to fit in.

Step 8: STEP 8:

I clicked "File" "Save for Web" and saved the object for the web as a .png file.

Step 9: STEP 9:

I opened: https://www.shapeways.com/creator/2dto3d#landing

I scrolled down and uploaded my file to the page - made sure it looked good.

This website allows you to turn 2D images into 3D images.

I then downloaded the model with the link at the bottom and got an .x3db file.

Step 10: STEP 10:

I opened my .x3db file with NetFabb (can be found here: http://www.netfabb.com/downloadcenter.php?basic=1) and converted my file to an .stl file (which is what Makerware needs) by clicking "Part" "Export Part" "as STL"
