Introduction: Wire Mesh Vase
I made a vase from Chequer-plate a while back and it turned out pretty good.
I still had the template so I thought I might try some other materials. Since I happened to have some mesh in my shed I decided to give it a go.
Here's how you can make one too:
Mine looks Ok but unfortunately it leaks.
I hope liked my Instructable. I will be making another one from steel plate one day and I plan to make a proper step-by-step then.
Please feel free to comment and ask questions.
I still had the template so I thought I might try some other materials. Since I happened to have some mesh in my shed I decided to give it a go.
Here's how you can make one too:
- First cut a template out of cardboard.
- Next place the template over the mesh and spray it with paint stencil-fashion.
- Make four more shapes the same making sure the horizontal wires will line up when the pieces are joined.
- Then cut out the shape with an angle grinder.
- Now for the hard part.
- Try to bend the mesh roughly into shape.
- Starting at the base weld the pieces together wire by wire.
- Try not to use too many swear words when you tear bits of skin off your knuckles.
- Sorry I don't have pictures of the process. I didn't really have enough hands to hold the job and weld, let alone take pictures at the same time.
- Don't give up.
- Eventually you will have a beautiful vase.

can I use a butane torch with solder to weld this mesh?

Give it a try. What could possibly go wrong?

This is absolutely awesome! I'm in love with the wire baskets and I believe you could make them easily and have them match your vases... Great instructable!
Thanks!

Very Nice!!!!
I think a dark (Pine) green would look nice.
I also like the look of the four sides thinking that 6 sides would be too busy.
Sorry for the leaks you encountered. Funny how water finds the tiny holes! ;)

This could be great for dried flower arrangements. Then you won't have to worry about leakage.
I imagine a nice coat of spray paint would gussy it up a bit too.

My wife filled mine with pine cones. Looks nice.
It is painted - roughly - with silver spray paint. It was all I had. Another colour might look better.

You should photograph that and post it here! The silver is probably nice, but the great thing about paint is that you can always add another coat if you get tired of that one. :-)

It is painted in the pictures actually. I guess it looks like gal, but at least you can't see the burns at the welds.

Oh, I know. I meant to photograph it with the pine cones inside. It could look festive with gold-spray-painted pine cones inside. Just an idea.

I reccomend sugaru to stop the leaks. :)

Good idea. But then I would have to change the name to "steel reinforced sugru vase".

Nice job!
Maybe I 'll do one when I finish to dress my new workshop. What probably I will not be able to meet is point 8.
Try a vase with 6 faces!

I will try with six faces on day. I will have to change the template (I think) or the finished product will be really fat.

Was this made of five pieces welded together? It looks amazing! I can't believe you welded each wire. Your effort really shows; it is beautiful!

Thanks. Yes. five including the square base.

Cool. I wasn't sure if it was made of separate pieces, or of one piece crazy manipulated.
