I was trying to think of an instructable for Valentine's day and came up with this heart pendant design. It's a relatively quick project that you can make as a gift or for yourself. The materials are also really cheap. It's kind of a tacky design, but hopefully if you like the concept you can improve it.

These instructions are pretty vague because I was making the design details up as I went along with just a idea in my head, so I tried to take many pictures that hopefully explained the steps better than I could in words. Alternatively, you can draw the actual shape i made onto paper and use that as a pattern for shaping the wire.

You ca modify the design to fit your preferences by changing the shape and dimensions of the heart and wings; if I made this again I personally would have made the wings longer.

This is my first instructable here, so if you comment, please keep in mind that I am not very experienced in the ways of making a step-by-step guide or wire shaping. I hope you find that this at least gives you inspiration for a new project.

Step 1: Materials

About 20 inch piece of wire - I used 18 gauge here but I would think that 20 or 16 could be used as well.
Jewelry pliers - Roundnose is probably your best bet for creating loops; I didn't have them
Smaller circular object for creating loops if you don't have roundnose pliers; I used a pen. Really doesn't matter what the diameter is.
Larger circular object: For creating the wings. Just use a tube of lip balm, the cap to a spray bottle, etc. 1/2 to 3/4 inch diameter, but again wire is easily adjustable so anything near that range should work.
Chain, any kind of clasp or jump rings you prefer to use. You choose the length of this pendant.

Step 2: Creating the Heart

You'll need to find the center of your length of wire- you can just estimate.
Create a loop in the center of the wire by wrapping the wire around the pen - see photo.
Take the loop off of the pen. (second photo)
Make the loop smaller and more of an oval shape by pulling on either end of the wire slightly. It should look somewhat like the third photo.
Shape one side of the heart. You'll need to see the fourth photo for the shape: unfortunately I cannot explain this very well. Basically create an upward curve in the wire that goes back down.
Do the same to the other side. See the pictures for a better reference. You can always adjust the shape later as well.
After you shape both sides the wires will cross each other.

Step 3: Twist the Wires

Hold the bottom of the heart with the pliers so you can easily twist the wires together.

Again, you should check the photos to see what I mean.

Now the wires should be going in their opposite direction.

Step 4: Wings Part 1

I should mention now that you can hammer the heart slightly if you wish to flatten it. However, as a warning, if you hammer the wire too thin, it will break very easily if you happen to bend it! I recommend that you not hammer the loop at the top of the wire because of this. It is not necessary to do this if you prefer the look of round wire better. My hammering skills are pretty bad, so you'll see that the surface of the heart is uneven haha.

Bend both wire ends up so they line up with the sides of the heart. See pics.
Now you'll need to bend the two wires so they form "arms" that reach out from either side of the middle of the heart. Use pliers to bend the wires and look at the photos.
Turn the heart to the reverse side so the wire arms are on the back of the heart.

Step 5: Wings Part 2

Take your larger circular object. Wrap the pieces of wire just near the heart halfway around the object to create a U-shape of curve. See photographs. Also, I'm sorry for the blurriness of some of these photos, oops.
Do the same to the other side.
The wire "arms" ends should now be going downward.

Step 6: Wings 3

You'll create another curve here about the level of the apex of the heart.. You can use the pliers or your fingers if the wire is pliable enough. The wire should curve upward now. Refer to the pictures.

Do the same to the other wire.

Step 7: Wings 4

At the end of the curve you just made, use pliers to bend the wire into the tip of the wing. Then bend it back towards the heart. Use the photos for clearer instructions on how to do this.

Alternatively, you can make a loop and bend it back toward the heart. I didn't do this, but I realized later that it might be easier to use the loop as the tip of the wing.

Step 8: Wings 5

Now would be a good time to adjust the curves forming the outer edge of the wing. In the fourth photo you can see the adjustments that I made; if you want to change the design as well you should do it after step 1 below:

For the bottom of the wing, make a loop on the inner edge by wrapping the wire around your pliers or a pen. The end of the wire should still be going towards the heart.
Wrap the remaining wire around the edge of the heart. (third and fourth photos) If you have too much excess wire then cut it off. Make sure that the edges are not sharp: bend them so that they are not facing out or file them down.
Repeat on the other side. Make sure that the wire that wraps around one edge is the mirror image of the wire that wraps around the other edge (that is, if one is wrapped clockwise the other is wrapped counterclockwise). (fifth photo)

Step 9: Final Steps

The main pendant should be completed now. You may still be able to make a few changes to the wings now.

For the chain: The type of chain and length is your choice, but I recommend using a chain with links that can be opened so the chain can be attached to the pendant and a clasp can be attached. I opened the links on either end of my chain and attached the wings.
