Introduction: Wood Calvin and Hobbes Snowmen

About: I'm a geek, I'm a dad, and I make things

This is a relatively easy build that you can do in an afternoon that will help bring some decorative cheer to your living space. And it's Calvin and Hobbes! How could you ever go wrong with Calvin and Hobbes?!

Here's how I put the wood Calvin and Hobbes snowmen together:

Step 1: Materials

The materials I used were:

3/8" thick board (I used a 6" wide piece)
Picture frame (I got mine at Hobby Lobby

Tools:
Scroll saw
Exacto knife
Paint (white, black, brown, green)

Step 2: Draw the Snowmen

I started by choosing a snowman to draw. Although there are a bunch of amazing Calvin and Hobbes snowmen to choose from, I chose one of the protesting snowmen. Using a pencil I started drawing him on the 3/8" board. I did this freehand, but you can trace, copy, or transfer the snowman to the board.

Although it happened later, I went back and drew out a 2nd snowman to fit in the frame

Step 3: Cut Them Out

Using a scroll saw, I cut out the snowmen that I drew on the boards. For the inside sections by the snowmen's banners that needed cutting, I drilled a hole and then fed the scroll saw blade through the hole and cut out the middle piece.

Step 4: Paint the Snowmen

Before putting some color to the snowmen, I took the exacto knife and cut the edges of the snowmen where the drawn sections were. I intentionally did this unevenly, so that once painted the black lines would look like drawn lines rather than smooth straight lines.

After the edges were cut out, we painted the snowmen. It is a fun and messy process, but in the end the snowmen looked more like snowmen than wood!

Step 5: Putting It All Together

With the snowmen painted and dry, I glued each of them into the frame. Since I was using the frame backwards, I removed the hardware on the back (now front) of the frame and screwed the hardware back onto the front (now back) of the frame.

Step 6: Hang and Enjoy

Last thing to do is find a good spot in your house and hang your festive, and protestive, snowmen.

Like I said, simple and easy build but one that will definitely add the right amount of holiday awesomeness to your wall
