Introduction: Wooddrum
This drum, made in the Fablab, has two sides. At the side were you can see the plastic, there is an edge. If you hit the edge with the drumstick, the rice between the 2 plastic plates will jump up, hit the plates and make noice.
If you turn around the instrument, you can hold the drum at the edge. If you hit the drum with your hand, you hear the rice jumping up in combination with the drum sounds.
Step 1: Bottom Layer, Lasercutter
First decide which diameter you want for your drum.
For example, we chose a for a drum with a diameter of 145 mm.
Draw the circle with a diameter of 145 mm in Illustrator.
With the lasercutter, you cut out the circle.
Step 2: Small Edges, Lasercutter
On Illustrator you draw a circle with a diameter of 145 mm. Starting from the midpoint, you draw another circle with a diameter of 135 mm.
With the laser cutter you cut out the edges.
Step 3: Plastic Plates, Laser Cutter
On Illustrator you draw two circles with a diameter of 145 mm.
We chose for a text on both of the circles, but you can use your own imagination.
Cut them out with the laser cutter, the text is engraved.
Don't forget to use the RGB red color to cut and the black color to engrave! The lines need to be 0,01 pt or else the laser cutter won't notice them.
Step 4: L-circles, CNC Milling Machine
This needs to be done in Aspire. First you need to draw the outside circle (profile 2). It has a width of 145 mm and a height of 5 mm. After that the inner circle (profile 1), with a width of 135 mm and a height of 5 mm. Both those circles need to be cut fully trough the wood. At last the middle circle (pocket 1), with a width of 140 mm and a height of 2,5 mm. It's important that you change your settings to 'inside' with profile 2 and 'outside' with profile 1. At the end you can click on 'preview all toolpaths' so you can see the result. Double click on the unnecessary wood so it disappears.
Step 5: Drum Stick, 3D-Printer
In Solidworks you draw the half of a drum stick and than revolve it. Again, use your imagination. After that, you can print it with the 3D-Printer.
Step 6: Glue It All Together
Start with the bottom layer and glue it together with one of the big edges. After that, glue the first plastic plate. On top of that, glue the small edge. Sprinkle the rice on it, as much as you think you will need. Above that you glue another big edge and at the and, to finish, glue the last small edge on top of it.
