Introduction: Wooden Mother's Day Heart

In this Instructable I will be showing you how to make a wooden Mother's Day heart as a piece of jewelry.

You will need:

A hard surface

A pair of bolt cutters or sharp scissors

Popsicle sticks

Hot glue and hot glue gun

Some napkins

A Sharpie

Paper or Foamboard

(Optional) Wood stain

(Optional) foam brush

Step 1: Making the Template

First make a template for a heart. I traced a heart on some Foamboard, and then cut it out with a pair of scissors. Make sure your hearts length and width are shorter then 4 cm x 4cm.

Step 2: Tracing the Heart

Get your hot glue gun out and glue four Popsicle sticks side by side in a row. Then put your heart template down and begin to trace. After you are done with that, separate the Popsicle sticks from each other. Now you have the main body for your heart.

Step 3: Cutting Out the Pieces

Cut out the individual pieces from the wood. Remember to cut directly on the black line, and cut slowly to prevent splintering.
Use common sense and make sure you don't get your fingers caught in the blade. You might have to re cut parts of it. Persevere and keep going. Once you have the pieces cut to satisfaction, proceed to the next step.

Step 4: Gluing the Pieces Together

Begin gluing the pieces together. To keep it cheap and simple, I used hot glue, but you could use a nicer adhesive if you wanted to. If you use hot glue, I recommend setting it on low heat. After I was done I scraped off the leftover adhesive. Make sure you do a good job, because this is for your mother.

Step 5: Gluing on Supports

To stabilize the heart, I cut two small chunks of wood from a Popsicle stick. I the glued them to the back to form a V shape. This adds surprising stability to the heart, and will make it last a long time. Your almost done!

Step 6: Staining Your Heart

The heart is almost finished, but to make it into something that your mom won't be ashamed to wear in public, we need to stain it. Follow the instructions on the back of your stain container. I recommend going slowly and using a foam brush. After you apply stain, let it dry overnight.

Step 7: Finishing Up

You are officially done! Now you have an amazing gift to give to your mom! I decided to hot glue a piece of wire onto it, which I bent into a ring. I'm really exited to surprise her with this wonderful gift. I am entering this into the first Instructable contest, since this is my first Instructable! Please remember to vote, and happy Mother's Day!
