Introduction: Woodshed
A woodshed will keep your firewood dry, free of snow and allows you to stack wood higher. This particular build is rustic and not to code since it is in an isolated area in the middle of the bush.
Step 1: Floor and Posts
This woodshed is four feet by eight feet and so it can hold three rows of 16 inch long firewood. Place the woodshed so that its back will be towards the prevailing winds.
Place three deck blocks on the ground along the front of the woodshed and three deck blocks along the back all at the same level. Set pressure treated 2 x 4's on the deck blocks and frame the floor with 16 inch centers. Screw in 4" x 4" x 8 foot posts on the inside of each corner and against the middle joist of each long side, making sure that they are plumb. Run a 2 x 4 along the side posts at the angle that you would like the roof and mark the slope. Areas with more snow should have a steeper angle. Cut the tops of the posts to that angle.
Run two support 2 x 4's along each long side.
Screw deck boards to the joists, cutting out for the posts. Leave at least a half inch gap between them.
Step 2: Walls
Run rafters at 16 inch centers resting on the two support 2 x 4's and screw them in. Nail 1 x 6 boards along the side and the back, leaving a half inch gap between each board so that air flow will help to dry out the firewood. Nail 1 x 6 boards along the two center posts to create two sections of the woodshed. This way you will use the firewood in the driest section and then fill it up with green wood so that it dries while you use the other section.
Step 3: Roof
Screw on metal roofing with an overhang of at least 8 inches on the front and back. The side overhang should only be an inch. If you want an asphalt single roof, you will have to put sheeting on before the asphalt shingles.
Step 4: Kindling Ledge
Run three 1 x 6 boards about five feet high from the side to the center walls of the wood shed, leaving a half inch gap between them. This allows a convenient, dry place to keep your kindling. You can do it on both sides if you'd like.
