Introduction: Workbench Project

Freeman High School, Richmond, VA

Colin Chewning, Owen Glass and I wanted to build something that could be used for the average man. Obviously the average man is someone who spends more than their income on fishing gear and has nowhere to store it, therefore their fishing gear is all over the place and their room looks like a tornado went through Bass Pro. This workbench can be used for any worker or fisherman as an organizer for their gear and tools.

Features:

  • This workbench comes with a lower shelf for storing all of your tackle bags and boxes.
  • A Pegboard is included to hang up lures, fishing line, and tools
  • 3 rod holders on each side of the bench allow for you to store your rods by your workspace without them falling over or possibly getting stepped on.
  • Multiple different sized holes on the canopy are included for storing more easy accessible tools that can be stored when not used.

Our group came up with the idea of the workshop/fishing bench because of a YouTube video and our love for fishing. We thought about how we could make storing your fishing supplies easier and more accessible in your garage. We then went to work on getting the supplies we needed and brainstormed the steps we were going to take to make this project happen.

Once the game plan was made we drew out a sketch of our bench. This first sketch included materials that we were going to use and a rough estimate of the dimensions. When drawing we came up with the idea of a peg board for the upper half and wings on the side that would be able to hold multiple fishing rods. We then went to work on the actual building and kept coming up with ideas on the fly during the process. We cut more holes on the top above the peg board for even more storage and wheels on the bottom for easy movement around the workplace.

Once in Fusion 360, our project was over halfway done. This was the easiest part because the bench was already done and so all we had to do was copy it onto Fusion 360. The online portion consisted of everything that we built such as the peg board, the rod holders, storage underneath, and wheels.

Supplies

We acquired wood pallets from a friend and used the wood from them to create the bench. We got the peg board from a local store, and cut it in order for it to fit accordingly.

Step 1: Frame and Legs

Step 1 was to make the frame and legs. We figured out how tall we wanted the bench to be, and used this to make the project.

Step 2: Top

We then built the top of the table top.

Step 3: Lower Support

We then were able to build the base of the workbench.

Step 4: Pegboard

Finally, we cut and attached the pegboard.

Step 5:

We created the workbench in Fusion 360.
