Introduction: Workshop Storage & Upgrades

A year ago the power was switched on in my workshop (you can see how I built it here) and I've spent the year making projects, building kids' invention ideas and working out how the space might work. When I shared the 'building of the workshop' I didn't really show you much of the inside, that because it's taken almost a year to feel happy with the way the space flows and how I store my tools. I wanted to share some of the things that have really helped me and that I love in my workshop.

Step 1: Metal Work and Power Tools

This corner of the workshop has my welder, plasma cutter and all my tools I need for metal fabrication. I recently added a metal sheet to a section of the workbench at this end to make it easier to weld. You can see how I did that HERE. This metal tool board is so useful and something I want to add more of in the workshop. I also have my Makita Power Tool Shelf on this side. This is made with ply and has slots for all of my powertools and the charger. This means that I know where everything is and it keeps it nice and tidy.

Step 2: Dual Use Shelf

This end of the workshop is often the end we will use to film the into and outro for Kids Invent Stuff and these shelves allow me to store small items in the baskets- grinding disks, PPE and small components while also having inventions (from my channel & Kids Invent Stuff) on the top. I also have a few tool sets on display and within easy reach of the workbenches.

Step 3: Draws

The workshop can get quite dusty so draws are great. These black draws were actually my Grandads- that unfortunately I never got to meet- who was a quantity surveyor. I've had them in either my office or work space since being 16. Currently they store small bits of metal and PTFE as well as paper (which originally my Grandad put in there decades ago!).

Step 4: Metal Storage

I recently made some metal brackets to hold my long lengths of metal and wood. You can see how I made them HERE. They have made a massive difference to this side of the workshop.

Step 5: Up-cycling a Filing Cabinet and My Pillar Drill Corner

This little corner is one of my favourites in the workshop. As I mention is the video above, the pillar drill sits on a modified Ikea kitchen unit and has shelves behind it for all of my drill bits and cutting fluid. The art work is a poster Estefannie was selling last year and it really brings it all together. The filing cabinets used to be in my office and were a horrid grey colour, so I gave them a new lease of life with a lick of paint. You can see how HERE.

Step 6: Shadow Foam

The workshop upgrades never really end and organising the toll draws in the workshop are next. I've teamed up with Shadow Foam to help me do that and they want you to be able to do that too.

You can get 10% off Shadow Foam using my code RUTHAMOS and you can give it a try by getting a free sample using the code- trymefree

(one per customer & it can’t be ordered in conjunction with anything else, over 18 as it includes a blade)

Let me know how you organise your workshop!
