Introduction: World Map From Sew

Hello. In this instructable, I will show you how I made the map of the world using only string and nails. Of course, you can make anything you want. I used the world map because it looks really good at night and it is a perfect size if you want to hide damaged walls. let's get started making it.

Step 1: Materials and Tools

Making this map is not a huge investment, I personally spent only about 15€ for the entire project. You can find most of the required materials in your local hardware shop, the only thing that I order online is the LED strip that you can find below. And of course you will need some basic tools like hammer, drill, screwdriver, soldering iron and hot glue.

Step 2: Getting All Tohether

I started by measuring the perfect size for the wooden board witch in my case is 80x60cm for nails and sew. Later I have made some templates using MS paint and some online images. The next thing were the LED strip, some short copper tubes and one longer copper tube, along with a bunch of nails and some sew, which I used two colors of.

Step 3: Drilling Holes

I started this project by measuring smaller copper tubes and drilling two holes that are equally distant from either end of the tube. they will later be used for mounting everything to the wall. All four holes should go straight through the tube. I used a 3 mm drill bit to drill the first hole on each tube and a 6 mm drill bit to drill the second pair. After that I used a 3 mm drill bit to press it against smaller holes until both holes connected.

Step 4: Screwing Copper Tubes

When you are done drilling you can screw copper tubes in place. Make sure that they are symmetrical to one another and evenly away from the edge of the wood.

Step 5: LED Strip

I used an LED strip for the ambilight and trust me - it looks awesome. I have put my LED strip about 2 cm away from the edge and mounted the controller at the corner with some double-sided tape. In the corners I have cut the LED strip and soldered cables to right pairs: RED to RED, GREEN to GREEN, BLUE to BLUE and 12V to 12V. Later I used some hot glue on top of the LED strip just to make sure that it would not fall down.

Step 6: Larger Copper Tube

The larger copper tube is used at the bottom and is made with the same 3 mm drill bit as previous copper tubes.

Step 7: FIRST TEST

Step 8: Setting Up Tamplates

I started by cutting every side of the paper to make everything fit nicely together. I used some transparent tape to tape everything together. Templates are made for 80x60 cm wood.

Step 9: Nails

Here comes one of the most boring parts of the project. I had to hammer every nail on its place. I used a hammer and pliers for that. When you are nailing make sure that the nails are sticking out just enough and they are about the same height.

Step 10: Borders

Borders are done with a darker sew (in this project it is a black sew). To make the borders, just have to circle and zig zag between nails.

Step 11: Removing Tamplates

When you are done with borders, you are free to remove the templates. Just make sure to do it slowly and take your time so you don't cut any sew. I used a knife to do this. I also helped myself with tweezers at the end.

Step 12: Compass

I did not complicate too much with the compass. All I did was just hitting in few nails and connecting them with black sew.

Step 13: Wall Mounting

I used some 90-degree screws for mounting everything to the wall, but if you don't have any of them at home you can just use normal screws. I drilled 2 holes in the wall with Hilti and put some plastic plugs in the hole just to make everything easier.

Step 14: Glowing Continents

This step is optional. If you have bought a lot of LED strip you can make glowing continents. Give this a shot it, is pretty simple.

Step 15: Finishing Continents

When you are done with electronics you can start with the last step. The job here is pretty simple - you just have to fill as much space as possible.

Step 16: Conclusion

This project was very fun to make. Even though it is a really time-consuming project with a lot of boring work, when it is finished it looks really nice at night. Maybe I will make another project like that in the future.
