Intro: Yin Yang/ Qigong Pyrograved Clock

I would like to share with you this wooden clock I made for a friend, using wood from an old pallet.

Hope you like it!

STEP 1: What You Will Need

  • wide pallet plank
  • nails
  • white wood glue
  • hammer
  • wood carving knife
  • clock mechanism
  • pyrograver
  • electric sander
  • electric jigsaw
  • compass
  • wax
  • cloth

STEP 2: Cutting the Wood and Assembling the Clock

  • I had a very dirty and old wide plank from a pallet,so I started of by sanding it until it was clean If your plank isn´t very dirty you can leave the sanding for later)
  • Draw two semi circles with a compass and cut them with the electric jigsaw.
  • Then cut from the same board two pieces of wood with enough length to join the two semi circles together. Apply white wood glue and nails to do this.
  • Now you have a circle. Mark the center and drill a hole.

If the shaft of your clock mechanism is long enough, you would be done at this point. The shaft of mine was short, so I had to patiently carve space on the back of the clock to place in the mechanism.

STEP 3: Pyrograving the Design

If you haven´t already sanding your wood, you must do so now before proceeding.

The surface of the clock face should be nice and smooth.

With a pencil, free hand draw the tree or if you can´t to this, use carbon paper to trace your design. I used a yin yang tree I found here, as it was free for non commercial use.

Then start pyrograving (this will take some patience and time), but will turn out really nice.

STEP 4: Finishing

Apply bee wax with a cloth, evenly troughout the wood. Let dry and then polish with a clean cloth, until you get a smooth and beautifull finishing.

Assemble the clock mechanism and it´s done!

Hope you have fun making one! :)

Many thanks :) And yes, my friend liked it a lot. She´s an Qigong instructor, and that´s why I pyrograved a Yin Yang tree :). I too was very happy with how it turned out!
