Intro: Zoya the Destroya G.L.O.W. Cosplay Tutorial

If you haven't watched the Netflix Original Series, GLOW, there's still time to binge before season 2 premieres on June 29th. The series follows Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie) who is a struggling actress. She auditions for an unconventional role after finding no success with auditioning for underwhelming bit-parts. When Director Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron) holds an open call audition for a serial role with the female analog of WWE, Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, a.k.a. GLOW, she creates the in-ring stereotyped persona of the Russian wrestler, “Zoya the Destroya”.

With help from the talented cosplayer Uncanny Megan, Costume Supercenter created a step by step tutorial so that you can cosplay as Zoya the Destroya yourself!

Materials Needed:

  • Kwick Sew's K3502 sewing pattern
  • Metallic red spandex
  • Black vinyl
  • Medium red zipper
  • Elastic
  • Two gold star patches
  • A Gold button
  • Star belt buckle
  • Snap tape
  • VelcroEyelets

STEP 1: Cut Out Pieces From the Templates

Cut all the appropriate pieces out of a leotard pattern. Place them on newspaper, trace them out, and then alter accordingly to match Zoya’s leotard. (Cut out a space for a bare shoulder and holes in the elbows of the sleeve.)

Pin the template pieces to the metallic red spandex.

Fold the leftover fabric and cut out the neck piece.

STEP 2: Sew the Sleeve

Start at the sleeve. Fold over and pin the elbow holes and edges. Sew the hemlines down. NOTE: a zigzag stitch is required to sew this stretchy fabric.

Attach the shoulder piece together. Pin and sew the full sleeve into place.

STEP 3: Sew the Body

Match up the seams and then pin the costume together from the bottom of the sleeve to the bottom on the hip.

Sew the seam.

Pin down and sew the other side.

STEP 4: Sew the Half Sleeve and Collar

Hem the top of the half sleeve with elastic.

Sew the sides together.

Create a tiny band by sewing a small tube of leftover fabric to cover up the top of the sleeve.

Fold the collar piece in half and pin it onto the suit.

Hem the open shoulder and the bottom of the collar.

Fold the edges over and pin them down. Use a zigzag stitch to sew them into place.

STEP 5: Attach the Zipper

Zippers require a special sewing machine foot called a zipper foot. This foot makes it easy to sew right alongside the teeth of the zipper. If you’re using an invisible zipper, they make an invisible zipper foot as well! Use a straight stitch to sew your zipper.

Line up the remaining part of the back pieces and sew them together.

Pin and sew the crotch into place.

Finish up the top of our leotard by hemming the sides of the collar and sewing some snap tape down. (One piece on the outside, one piece on the inside.)

STEP 6: Hem the Leg Holes

Fold the hemline over, pin it down, and sew it into place.

STEP 7: Add the Shoulder Piece

Draw up a generic shape and cut out two pieces, one in red and one in black. Sew a small piece of Velcro onto the red side before attaching the pieces. Place the pieces right side in, pin them down and sew them together.

Flip the new piece inside out and pin the edges down. Use a straight stitch to sew the sides down. Sew the star patches into place with a longer topstitch.

Attach the shoulder piece to the leotard by pinning it down and then hand sew a gold button through both the shoulder piece and the leotard's neckline.

Use a sewing machine to sew the flat corner down to the sleeve seam.

STEP 8: Create the Belts

Cut out a strip of vinyl to match the width of the star buckle. Sew the vinyl around the buckle.

Measure out the placement for three eyelets, mark them down, cut small holes, and install them using an eyelet tool. For the secondary belt, cut a thin strip of material and add some snaps. Secure the opposite side of the Velcro sewed onto the shoulder piece. This is so the belt can be slid under the piece and be locked into place.
