It’s that time of the year where you need to start getting into the real Christmas planning. Decorations are going up. The detailed plans for the who, the what, the where and the how are underway. You’ve still got time to make gifts and decorations.

For table and home decorations, you might like to try this idea if you’d like something new for the table – Christmas boxes wrapped in fabric. Stack them neatly with candles for a centerpiece, and position a box at each place setting. Or you could hide them in the tree. You can put little trinkets, sweets or special messages (or quotes) inside the boxes to make it more fun for kids. We’ve used scraps of fabric* and old boxes. Choose a combination to suit your colours for the table. Who says it needs to be red and green?

Step 1: ​Materials

• Packaging boxes

• Offcuts of fabric

• Scissors

• Glue stick

• Hemming tape, ribbons, trims

Step 2:

Open up each box and flatten it back to the original shape. Use a knife if needed to separate adhered sections. Cover the printed side (outside) with glue. Place face down on the underside of the fabric.

Step 3:

When dry, cut around the outside perimeter of the box.

Step 4:

Fold the box back together, gluing the original seams back in place.

Step 5:

Make lots! Assemble a combination of patterns, colours and shapes. A washed blue Christmas theme works well with calico, wood and linen.

Step 6:

Traditional bright red and green is always festive.

Step 7:

Make a centrepiece using small votive candles in vases. Try earthy, rust colours and dark green for a vintage look.
