fire steels are not made of flint, they are ferrocerium, an alloy. also when starting a fire with real flint you strike the steel with the flint, not the other way round.

oh i ment flint as in the stone. you know, flint spear head?

i dont know any where you can buy it... but all you gotta do is go to a river and try and find some. to test it you can strike the back of a knife with it and see if you get sparks

Good idea but why not just use the sticks? Also, you could put in some foil and put a fuse in (mix the tinder with a little lighter fluid). I don't know what it would do but, it would do something. Or mix the tinder with cotten. It would burn longer too. Or wood, ha.
Reply 15 years ago on Step 4
well the thing is... is that mixing with aluminum wont do anything because tinder sticks and lighter fluid are not oxidizers... so u would more than likely end up with a burning pile giving off aluminum smoke... and god knows how bad that is for your lungs... but hey, thx for throwing out the idea!

Well, I ment put it inside like a ball of foil but it would be the same thing... but what about the cotton? Wouldn't that work?

Even better, and Cheaper... Dryer Lint. That fuzz that gets trapped in your dryer that everyone throws away... Its actually very flammable and burns slow enough to catch your tinder.
