Introduction: Car Carrier Kit

PURPOSE: Use the least number of ZOOB BuilderZ pieces to build a vehicle that can complete at least one of the following challenges. Start with the one that interest you the most.

Step 1: Document

Document and share your process and final object by taking photographs and/or videos with your phone. Be sure not to include any faces. Email or text Indiana University Researchers at makengineeringkits@gmail.com. We may post these on our Facebook page – STEM Education Research Group at IUB (@IUBSTEMeducation).

Step 2: CHALLENGE ONE:

Follow a straight track for a distance of 10 feet.

KIT-CHAT

1. How will you know when you have reached a distance of 10 feet? What tool or household item(s) might be useful?

2. Why might your car not follow a straight track?

Step 3: CHALLENGE TWO:

Carry a load of material such as a can of food or rocks.

KIT-CHAT

1. What is the heaviest load you car can carry without "breaking down"? How will you keep track of your data?

2. How might the number of wheels on the car change the amount you can carry?

Step 4: CHALLENGE THREE:

Achieve top speeds when rolled down a ramp.

KIT-CHAT

1. How will you know when your car achieves top speeds? How can this be measured?

2. How does your top speed relate to how far the car travels?

3. At what angle will your car achieve top speeds? How do you know? How steep was your ramp when it achieved top speeds?

Step 5: EXPLORATION:

Devise your own challenge(s) or exploration(s) using the ZOOB Builderz pieces. Be sure to write down ideas, and take photographs and/or record videos to share with others.

Step 6: DID YOU KNOW?

Mechanical engineers typically apply physical principles in designing and analyzing components of an automobile, including designing the engine, choosing appropriate material for the frame, and designing the ventilation system.

Industrial engineers oversee the manufacturing of automobiles, including ways to improve time, cost, and quality of the production process.
