Introduction: ChatBot + Talking Toys

This is how I use my own talking chatbots to make standard talking toys and gadgets from the toystore to speak endangered, dead, and science fiction languages with me.

This instructable will show you how to connect an animatronic talking toy to a chatbot.

Supplies

  • Computer with Keyboard, Speaker and Aux. Input.
  • A Talking Chatbot.
  • Animatronic/Robotic, Toy, Talking Head or Gadget that has an Aux. Jack. If it also lip-syncs, that can be even more fun (or annoying).
  • Hammer, Nails, Solid Wall above your computer, to hang your Animatronic (Talking Deer Head) on. I removed the horns from my talking Buck, as shown below.
  • Electrical Outlet close to where you will be hanging Buck.
  • A pack of your favorite Bubble Gum. It helps me to think and can come in handy for quickly hanging things on the wall and such.
  • Friends that will cheer you and your chatbot on. This is much more fun if someone is around to see you gleefully giggling with your new animatronics buddy.
  • ChatBots that speak endangered, dead, and science fiction languages can be found online at http://www.monigarr.com
  • Buck the Talking Deer Head, cost me around $100.00 u.s.d. around the year 2005 from Gemmy.com. You have millions of options to find with online shopping today (2023).

Step 1: Start Your ChatBot

NOTE: This original instructable was written more than 20 years ago as of 2023. I updated this article to include the most relevant info today. My new work can be found at MohawkLanguage.ca and MoniGarr.com

Fire up your chatbot and make sure you can hear its responses.

The original instructable I wrote here, was using ProgramD. I still like to use ProgramD because it lets me run my own chatbots on my own private web server. If you want some simple TTS (Text to Speech) codes for your own chatbots' webpage, you can find some in the book titled: Build Your Own Army of Web Bots within 24 Hours by Monica Lamb. (Note: the original book is available by request from MoniGarr.com)

Once your chatbot is running and you have verified it is responding to you with Text to Speech responses, it is time for you to plug your computer into your animatronics. You should be able to HEAR your chatbots responses on your computer speaker.

Step 2: Prepare the Animatronic

I hung up my talking trophy buck and made sure it was working correctly.

I took Buck out of its Box, removed the Horns, because my chatbot in this demo has a Kanien'kéha (Mohawk) Language Female Voice and Buck does care about his image. My husband argued for Buck, stating that any respectable Buck would not appreciate being looked upon as a femme Buck or a femme bot. I do not wish to disrespect my plastic Buck friend, so mine is now a respectable Kanien’kéha (Mohawk) talking Doe. Perhaps I will add some lipstick to complete the transformation?

I hammered a nail into the wall where I wanted to hang the animatronic near an electrical outlet for the power requirements.

I used the microphone that shipped with Buck to test and verify the animatronic responds as expected to sound input (my voice).

Step 3: Connect Animatronic to Chatbot on Your Computer

A long aux. wire is included with Buck. Both ends of this cord are the same and look like the photo below.

Plug one end of the wire into the Aux. on the right side of Buck.

Plug the other end of the wire into the Aux. outlet in your pc. It is usually outlined with Green.

Use your computer and say hello to your chatbot from the chatbot’s webpage (text or audio chat).

Voila, Buck should be lip synching, talking, and moving as your chatbot responds with speech, to your text input.

If you are anything like me, you are now giggling with glee as you have a meaningful conversation with Buck about it’s friends in the forest.

Step 4: TroubleShooting

If your animatronic, robot, talking toy is not lip synching or moving with your Chatbot's responses, do the following:

  • Check the Aux. wire is plugged into the correct outlet in your PC
  • Check the Aux. wire is plugged into the Aux. at the side of Buck.
  • Verify you can HEAR the responses coming from your chatbot on your computer. If you can not hear anything: the animatronic is not 'hearing' anything either.
  • Final Resorts: send me a message, search google / youtube, ask ChatGPT for help.

Let me know about your interesting ChatBot Animatronic projects. I’m always happy to assist with Endangered Language / Low Resource Language / Indigenous Language Revival Projects. Kanien’kéha dialects are what my family, community and self speak.
