Classic hardtack is a type of bread/biscuit which sailors largely consumed during the 1500 to the 1900s. It is still common among sailors today, and many people refer to it as the 100 years bread since it can last well over 50 years. This instructable will teach you how to make it, follow the steps below
Classic Hardtack ingredients:
- 6 cups of a flour
- 1 cup of water
- oven and timer
- spoon or spatula
- large bowl
- sturdy mixer
Step 1: Basic Steps
Set oven to 375 F (190C) Some ovens tend to have a longer preheat time than others, make sure you do this step first if you want to save some time.
Start mixing the 6 cups of flour and 1 cup of water into a large bowl. This can be done in a mixer, or with a spoon/spatula.
Step 2: Shaping the Hardtack
Lay out the Hardtack dough on an ungreased cookie platter, and flatten it out.
Use pizza cutters and cut/shape the dough into a classic square (optional) You can use a skewer stick and poke four rows of four holes into the dough to make it look historical. Keep in mind that this step required the dough soft, and it cannot be done if the hardtack is already baked.
Step 3: WAIT
Place your hardtack dough (that is already rolled out and shaped into place on the cookie platter) into the oven. Set a timer for 30 Minutes and wait.
