For anyone that has never had flan before, flan is a sweet creamy custard dessert with a burnt sugar syrup that infuses the dessert. It may seem fancy or hard to make but the hardest part is waiting for it to cool off completely so you can enjoy it. This flan recipe consists of simple, basic ingredients that you would likely have on hand. Supplies:

Step 1: Ingredients & Tools

Ingredients

  • 1 cup white Sugar
  • 4 Eggs
  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened Condensed Milk
  • 1 (12 oz) can Evaporated Milk
  • 1 tablespoon Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of salt

Step 2: Melting Sugar

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

In a medium saucepan over medium-low heat melt sugar until amber color (be careful to not overcook it). Also, do not stir the pan (don't stir it with a spoon or spatula) but do swirl it if needed, you'll see that the sugar will need a little help turning that beautiful amber color.

Step 3: Coating the Ramekins

Carefully pour hot syrup into 8 ramekins, turning the dish to evenly coat the bottom and sides. (TIP: keep ramekins warm till you are ready to pour the hot syrup into them, this will help the hot syrup not set up right away and give you extra time to get the sugar will coated onto the ramekins).

Step 4: Adding Ingredients to Blender

In a blender add eggs, sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, vanilla and salt.

Step 5: Blend

Blend the mixture until smooth. Pour egg mixture through a sieve into a measuring cup.

Step 6: Filling Ramekins and Baking

Place ramekins onto a baking dish and pour the egg mixture into the ramekins. Place the baking dish into oven and carefully add hot water up to halfway up the ramekins. Bake for 30-40 minutes.

Step 7: Preparation for Serving

Once the flan is fully cooked, carefully remove ramekins from water and let them fully cool (I covered them with plastic wrap). When ready to serve, run and paring knife around the edges and tilt upside down on a plate.

Step 8: Enjoy!

    I love flan especially the caramel sugar on it. Every once in a while we make it here, same recipe. I do add one other ingredient that makes it even better and more creamier. It's kinda a secret. ;)
