This guide will show you how to take apart your Dish Hopper remote.

Warning:

You may break at least one snap closure clip that holds the controller together. Don't worry, the controller has many clips around the outside and you won't even notice once the controller goes back together. (I broke 3 in this guide, only broke 2 on a previous controller teardown, go figure). Do this at your own risk.

Supplies

T6 screwdriver
Knife
2mm screwdriver (like from an eyeglass repair kit)
Flathead screwdriver for prying (larger head, this is your prying tool)
Soldering iron (for mic removal)

Step 1: Gather Your Tools

Having a T6 with a dimple in the center of the bit will work the best!

Step 2: Remove the Battery Cover

On the backside of the remote, use your thumb to slide the tab at the bottom of the remote to open up the battery door. You may need to use a screwdriver to help open the battery door if you have short nails.

Step 3: Remove the Batteries

Use your fingers or a flathead screwdriver to remove the AA batteries.

Step 4: Rear Screw Removal

Now that the battery door is gone, remove the two T6 screws located at the top of the remote.

Step 5: Opening the Back

This will be the hardest part. Be careful with your sharp tools!

We will want to start on the bottom of the controller first, then work up the side that does not have buttons on it. I prefer to work along the lower part of the red band around the controller (knicks in the plastic will be less noticeable).

First, insert the knife blade, so you can get your sharp screwdriver tip in. The reason you want to use the knife first is to reduce plastic chipping when inserting the 2 mm eyeglass' screwdriver.
Remove the knife.
Insert the larger prying screwdriver using the small 2 mm screwdriver.
Carefully turn/twist the screwdriver to pop the clips around the outside of the remote. (If needed, look ahead in this tutorial to see the location of the clips.
Continue popping open the clips until you are all the way around the remote until you reach the side buttons.
There is a connecting ribbon that connects the side buttons to the main circuit board, DO NOT try to remove this. You want to keep this intact! So cautious prying in this area.

Step 6: Circuit Board Removal

The circuit board is held to the front of the remote by a series of clips. The biggest clip is located at the top of the remote.

Use a plastic prying tool or your fingers to remove the circuit board. If you are in a dry environment use a plastic prying tool, or touch something metal to remove excess bodily electrical static before using your hands to remove the circuit board.
Remove the side button cover if it hasn't been removed already
Begin lifting up the circuit board from the bottom of the remote.
The red layer will get stuck at the top of the remote underneath the infrared emitter. Work around this component to get the red band out.

Great it's all apart!

Step 7: Front Assembly

Place the circuit board back into the keypad side of the remote. Press down the circuit board, starting with the clip at the top of the remote by the infrared emitter.
Make sure that the emitter is at a right angle with the board in case it was bent during the disassembly process.
Attach the remote's side button panel.

Step 8: Back Assembly

Snap the remote's back to the front.
Start at the top of the remote working down towards the bottom.
Make sure the battery contacts on the positive and negative sides are slid back into their cavities.
Replace and tighten the two screws located at the top of the remote.
Snap the batteries back.
Snap the battery door back into place.
