In this instructable, I will show you how to make Molasses Cookies. This recipe for soft molasses cookies is super easy to make, if I can do it you can do it. It is one of my sister's favorite cookies to make, she recently made them for me for Christmas, and I decided to show you all how to make them. For those of you who are not familiar with these cookies, they taste like a cross between a gingerbread cookie and a soft sugar cookie. Let's get baking!
If you have any questions or comments put them down below and I will get back to you as soon as I can.
Follow the easy steps below or watch the short video tutorial, or do both!

Step 1: Ingredients
- 1 cup of white granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup of shortening
- 1/4 cup of molasses
- 1 large egg
- 2 cups of flour
- 2 tsp. of baking soda
- 1 tsp. of cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. of ground cloves
- 1/2 tsp. of ginger
- 1/2 tsp. of salt
Step 2: Sift Together the Dry Ingredients
First let's sift together our dry ingredients. We will add our flour to the sifter, salt, cinnamon, baking soda, ground cloves, and ground ginger, then sift away. If you don't have a sifter, use a whisk, and mix the ingredients together really well.
Step 3: Cream Together Shortening, Molasses, and Sugar
Next we cream together our shortening, molasses, and the sugar in a large bowl. We will use our hand or stand mixer for this. After your are finished, scrape the sides of the bowl with a spatula.
Step 4: Add Egg and Mix
Now we will add our egg, and mix again, until it is nicely incorporated. Then once again we will scrape the sides of the bowl before adding our dry ingredients.
Step 5: Add Flour and Mix
Next we add our flour mixture about a third of it at a time, mixing in between, and scraping the sides of the bowl as needed.
Step 6: Clean and Chill
Now we clean the beaters, then ball up the dough with our spatula. Next we cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a lid, and chill in the refrigerator for at least 2 hours.
Step 7: Ball, Roll, and Bake!
Next we take a spoonful of dough, and roll it in our hands to create a ball, about the size of a large walnut, then roll it in a small bowl of sugar, and place on your silicone baking mat, parchment paper lined sheet pan, or un-greased cookie sheet. Now bake them in a preheated oven at 375 degrees F. for about 8 minutes. They should crack a little on the tops. Then pull them out of the oven and let them cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring them over to a wire wrack to finish cooling. Now enjoy them! :)
