Edit Your Photos As Sound : 6 Steps

Hi, this is my first instructable, I´m a multimedia designer from México, this is a simple technique called glitching or glitch art and its becoming popular among artists and it's super simple to do, so let´s begin. Also this will be a bilingual tutorial.

Hola, este es mi primer Instructable, soy un diseñador multimedia de México, esta es una técnica bastante simple conocida como glitching o glitch art y se ha vuelto muy popular entre artistas y es súper fácil de hacer así que empecemos

Step 1: Knowing Your Data

Well the basic thing is know that all of whats in your computer is data (binary in the core) but encoded in different forms, music, photos, texts or videos (that´s a rough approximation) the point is that when you create file and make a compressed format in your pc like a .jpg the data acquires a rigid format and creates a photo, it´s the same with .mp3 .mov .doc etc, so what we're gonna do is trick the system to process x kind of data as y kind of data, in this case .RAW images as .RAW audio file.

.RAW files are well... raw, it's uncompressed data that can be viewed as bitmaps or enriched waveforms and this is where the glitching begins, we're going to take the bitmap raw data and use it as a raw audio file manipulating the data in fun ways, this will also serve to understand how all the digital info is the same in a basic level.

Bueno, lo básico es saber que todos los datos que existen en tu computadora son iguales pero están codificados de manera distinta (los datos en su forma más básica son binarios) cuando se crean fotos, música, textos o vídeos (es una forma sencilla de explicarlo) el punto es que cuando creas un archivo en un formato comprimido como un .jpg los datos adquieren un formato rígido y se genera una foto, es lo mismo con .mp3, .mov, .doc etc, así que lo vamos a hacer es engañar al sistema para que procese x tipo de datos pensando que es y tipo de datos, en este caso vamos a usar imágenes .RAW como sonido .RAW

En el formato .RAW los datos no se comprimen y no tienen una forma determinada y los podemos ver como mapas de bits o sonidos y aquí es dónde el glitching empieza, vamos a tomar el mapa de bits y lo vamos a procesar como un sonido para lograr efectos bastante interesantes, también servirá para entender como toda la información digital es la misma en un nivel básico.

Step 2: TOOLS

This are the things that we'll be using

DSLR camera o Cellphone with RAW options
.RAW images or .CR2 images
Adobe photoshop or GIMP
Audio editing program like Adobe Audition
A PC

.JPG images will not work because the compressed data, you can try, but the result will be terrible

Estas son las cosas que necesitamos

Una cámara DSLR o un celular que pueda tomar fotos en RAW
Imágenes en .RAW o .CR2
Adobe Photoshop o GIMP
Cualquier programa de edición de audio como Adobe audition
Una computadora

Imágenes en .JPG no funcionarán adecuadamente porque están bastante comprimidas

Step 3: Gathering Your Images

This is the easiest part, juts take some pictures with your camera but make sure that the quality is set to RAW, then move them to your pc and check them out.

Then open up Photoshop or GIMP and save your images as .RAW images, the thing is Canon and Nikon use a proprietary encode of the .RAW format, so we're gonna just fave them in original .RAW,i recommend leave them as shot, then just save them as .RAW (File> Save As>RAW or CTRL+SHIFT+S)

Esta es la parte mas fácil, solo necesitas tomar fotos, pero necesitas asegurarte que la calidad esté en RAW, de ahí puedes mover las imágenes a tu computadora para checarlas.

Ahora abre Photoshop o GIMP y guarda tus imágenes en .RAW, lo que pasa es que Canon y Nikon utilizan su propia versión del formato así que solo las tenemos que guardar en .RAW original, no recomiendo editarlas, solo guárdalas como .RAW (Archivo> Guardar como> RAW o CTRL+SHIFT+S)

Step 4: FUN

This step is the fun one, just open up Adobe Audition or Pro tools or whatever program you use, this is almost try and error, just keep in mind that you are editing audio not an image so you'll have to get your hands dirty to know what things you can create.

Esta es la parte divertida, lo único que tienes que hacer es abrir Audition o Protools, esto es a base de prueba y error, solo ten en cuenta que editas sonido y no una imagen, así que tendrás que ensuciarte las manos para saber que cosas puedes crear

Step 5: Saving the Images

This is the last step and is a little tricky, open the images in Photoshop, a window will pop out, accept and try to save it, all the option will be disabled, just copy and paste it in a new file, then you can save it in .JPG or .PNG an TA DA you can show your art to your mom or friends :D

La ultima parte es un poco difícil, abre las imágenes en Photoshop o GIMP, se va a abrir una ventana, solo acepta y trata de guardar la imagen, no vas poder guardarla. solo copia y pega en un nuevo archivo y listo, ya podrás guardarla y presumirla a tus amigos o a tu mamá
