Introduction: Wooden Gandalf Pipe (2 Options) Fully Functional

About: i am an 20 year old from Monterrey Mexico who loves to do things on his own instead of buying them... i have taken a shield, a pipe, a sword and many other incredible projects out of this site and its time to …

I wanted to make a wooden Gandalf pipe for my dad, and for a costume for halloween. After countless hours of research i concluded that the best way to do it (if you dont have the proper wood) is either to make the guts out of metal or buy the bowl.

IT IS NOT A DIFFICULT PROJECT

PIPE #1 ALL HAND MADE
I HAD THEM ALL IN MY HOUSE BUT THEY ARE PRETTY EASY TO FIND (Academy)

MATERIALS:
1. Any kind of wood
2. CO2 gas tank (make sure its raw steel, 12 or 16g depends on the desired bowl size)
3. Sculpty (oven bake clay)
4. Aluminium arrow or metal tube
5. glue
6. Dremel
7. Saw
8. Drill
9. Paint

PIPE #2 ALREADY OWNED/ BOUGHT BOWL (EASIER) SKIP TO STEP 6
1. Aluminium arrow
2. Sculpty
3. Clay
4. Pipe Bowl

Step 1: Pipe#1 Carving the Wood

DRAW OUT THE TEMPLATE ON YOUR WOOD AND CARVE OUT THE BOWL.

Step 2: Pipe#1 Making the Hole

DRILL OUT A HOLE WITH A 3/4 INCH WOOD DRILL BIT AND ENLARGE THE HOLE WITH THE DREMEL OR ROTARY TOOLTILL THE CO2 TANK FITS INSIDE. MAKE ANOTHER HOLE SO THE TUBE (ARROW) GOES IN MAKING THE STEM.

TIP: MARK THE DRILL SO YOU DO NOT BREACH THE BOTTOM OF THE BOWL

Step 3: Pipe#1 Cutting the CO2 Tank

CUT THE TANK TO THE DESIRED BOWL SIZE USING A CUTTING WHEEL OR A SAW. DRILL A HOLE SO THAT IT LINES UP WITH THE PREVIOUSLY CUT AIR HOLE (SCRAPE WAY OR BURN AWAY THE ZINC COATING INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF THE TANK). MAKE SURE IT IS BIG ENOUGH FOR YOUR TUBE (ARROW)/ STEM.

Step 4: Pipe#1 Pasting the Bowls

PASTE THE TWO BOWLS TOGETHER USING GLUE ( I USED LIQUID NAILS) MAKING EXTREMELY SURE TO MATCH THE TWO HOLES PERFECTLY.

Step 5: Pipes#1#2 Cutting and Bending the Tube (Arrow)

STEP #5 PIPE #1/ STEP #1 PIPE #2

CUT THE TUBE TO THE DESIRED LENGHT AND PUT IT OVER A FLAME TO BEND, DO NOT BEND TOO MUCH OR TO FAST BECAUSE THE TUBE WILL BREAK.

(I CHOSE AN ARROW BECAUSE IT IS ALUMINIUM AND IT IS LESS POISONOUS THEN COPPER OR LEAD)

Step 6: Pipes#1#2 Sculpting the Stem

STEP #6 PIPE #1/ STEP #2 PIPE #2

THIS IS WHERE IT GETS A LITTLE TRICKY, USING THE SCULPTY MAKE SURE THAT THE TUBE AND THE HOLES IN THE BOWL ARE COMPLETELY SEALED. ALSO COAT THE TUBE WITH SCULPTY AND MAKE THE ALTERATIONS YOU DESIRE. WHEN HAPPY WITH THE SCULPTING COOK THE CLAY FOR THE REQUIRED TIME (CHECK THE BOX) MAK SURE IT IS HARD AND IF NOT STICK IT IN THERE FOR 5 MORE MINUTES.

Step 7: Pipes#1#2 Painting and Final Touches

STEP #7 PIPE #1/ STEP #3 PIPE #2

PAINT THE PIPES HOWEVER YOU LIKE BUT AVOID THE MOUTHPIECE AND INSERTION HOLE WITH PLASTIC IF USING TOXIC PAINT. MAKE THE FINAL TOUCHES AND VOILA YOU ARE DONE WITH YOUR PIPE.

Step 8: Enjoy

HOPE YOU LIKED THE PIPE, NOW GO ENJOY YOUR NEW CREATION, AND SEND ME SOME PICTURES TO SEE HOW YOURS TURNED OUT!
