This project is about making a cool gold waggon for my Märklin toy train set (H0 series; 1:87).
I used an old ragged chassis and built a waggon from scrap wood.

Time to built it was approx. 2 days (incl. curing of glue and drying of paint).

It required very basic skills in woodworking and was a lot of fun to make!

Enjoy the transformation from trash to (gold) treasure!

Step 1: Materials and Tools

Materials:

old waggon chassis
scrap wood 3mm, 1mm

white glue, two components glue

color varnish

Tools:

sanding paper

japanese saw

brushes

masking tape

cutter knife

coocking pot

Step 2: Making a Plan

Draw a sketch for all the components.

Step 3: Cut Components

Cut the wood according to sketch.

Sand the corners and smoothen the surface.

Step 4: Making the Curved Roof

To make the curved roof the wood has to become flexible.

Boil water in a pot and put the roof part in the water. Boil for 5 min.

Bend the flexible part around a curvend object (e.g. a can) and tie it with masking tape.

Let dry while fixed in curved position.

The parts stays in curved contour after this procedure.

Step 5: Glue and Paint Parts

Glue components and let them dry.

Apply paint and let dry.

Apply clear varnish and let dry.

Step 6: Accessories: Sliding Door and Gold Ingots

Sliding door: Cut door (same height as wall, 10mm wider than door clearance).
For the sliding door guidance cut 2 wooden strips approx 2x2mm (full length of waggon).

Glue one strip to the floor. Use door as a spacer.

Glue one strip between front and rear side for upper guidance of the door.

Door handle: glue a tiny strip to the door.

Insert the door from the top.

Gold ingots: Cut wood for ingots: 5x5x10mm paint them with gold color and glue them into the waggon.
