Introduction: How to Make a Man Pad

I once had a friend who every time he fought with his (then) girlfriend, would tell her to leave him alone and let him ‘spend some time in his cave’. Whether this was metaphorical or not I never found out. He was a big bloke, Nordic in ancestry and had a large bushy beard. He had a bit of a thing for camping, navigating and generally was an outdoorsy type person, so imagining him packing up his bags in a huff and taking off to a mountainside cave is not entirely impossible. When he did reappear with his girlfriend, some weeks later they seemed a lot happier.

This got me thinking, as it true that every man needs his ‘cave’. His own little space to potter about and do incredibly important things such as build a model aircraft, play ridiculously violent video games , listen to music  or read a book. We all need that time alone, the childish ‘no girls aloud area’ for us bloke to blow off some steam and do blokey things. I am no different, and have recently hewn a corner of my own house into a ‘man cave’; here are my tips for creating your very own man pad.

Step 1: The Setting

Maybe you’re part of an ancient hill tribe that still resides deep in the Andes and have come across a tourists smartphone in order to read this article, if you’re not then it’s more than likely that you don’t have a real cave in which to call your own. Never mind, there are still opportunities in your own home to build yourself a man cave.

Think of all the space you have in your house that’s going unused and unloved. Attic, basement, unused office or garden sheds are perfect for you to set up shop. Your shed probably doesn’t look anything like the above picture; in fact it probably looks like a bit of a tip with a load of useless junk inside it. But there’s no reason why it can’t look like the above picture. With a couple of miles of sand paper and a lick of paint, you’ll soon have your shed in tip top condition.

Remember the essentials to start off with; you’re going to need power and heat so electricity sockets are essential when choosing the location for your man pad.

Step 2: Interior

Space is everything in a man pad, so depending on what size your place is you’re going to have different options as to what you can fit inside your man pad. But as the above picture shows, there is one key feature that every man pad should have – a damn comfortable chair. I’m talking wingbacks, leather, lay-z-boys - the whole shebang. There’s nothing better than relaxing after a hard day’s work in a comfortable chair with a book or the local paper. Speak to a furniture directory and let them know what you want, they’ll be happy to help you out.

Step 3: Toys & Gadgets

It’s not a man pad until there’s some highly over complicated electronic device in there that only you know how to use in it. There are of course the obvious toys and gadgets that you can have in your man pad, T.V, beer fridge and stereo. But what about something a little bit more elaborate?

Why not go wireless? There are plenty of electronic gadgets around these days that make life so much easier. Get yourself a wireless adapter and make use of some of the awesome apps that are out there on the market at the moment. You can control your lighting, T.V, stereo and even the temperature in your man cave with the swish of your thumb on your smartphone or tablet. Meaning you never have to get out of your chair in order to create the perfect ambiance in your man cave.

Why not get yourself an awesome poker table and have your buddies round or go old school and get yourself a record player. Make your man pad into a hunting cabinet by getting a moose head and hanging it on the wall (taxidermy is expensive and a little weird so I’d recommend a fake one).
