To start, be sure that you keep your firearm pointed in a safe direction. Assure that it is unloaded before proceeding to the cleaning. To clean a handgun, begin by releasing the magazine, remove the slide from the receiver, and perhaps take the barrel out (if you’d like a deeper clean). You’ll want to use your favorite liquid or canned solvent. Let’s break the rest down into rapid-fire bullet points.

Swab the barrel out.
Clean the Slide Rails with a Q-tip.
Oil it down with a separate Q-tip.
Assure that the slider is clean and free of debris. This may require a spray.
Clean the magazine well from both sides.
