Introduction: How to Use a Pigg-O-Stat

The following instructable shows step-by-step how to use a Pigg-O-Stat. A Pigg-O-Stat is an immobilization device used for pediatric patients aged from infancy to two during radiologic procedures. The utilization of Pigg-O-Stats results in less physical harm to the patients and better radiologic images.

Disclaimer: When used properly, no harm will come to the pediatric patient and will result in better in radiologic images. If used incorrectly, or if Pigg-O-Stat is improperly secured, accidental self-harm to the patient may occur.

Materials Needed:

1- Pigg-O-Stat, fully equipped with:

(a) Seating

(b) Small and Large Supports

(c) Leather head straps attached to Supports

Step 1: Preparation

Before beginning the procedure, it is important to first prepare the Pigg-O-Stat. Based on the pediatric patient's age and weight, you will have to prepare the Pigg-O-Stat with either the small or large supports. Small supports are for those patients still within infancy; large supports are for pediatric patients beyond the age of infancy but before the age of two.

Step 2: Seating the Patient

Once the proper supports have been chosen, it is time to place the patient within the Pigg-O-Stat. Place the patient's bottom on the Pigg-O-Stat seat with the patient's feet on either side of the seat.
Note that the patient's feet will likely be airborne. This is preferred as it reduces the patient's ability to move.

Step 3: Raise the Patient's Arms

It is important to raise the patient's arms high above their head before moving onto step four. Raising the patient's arms above their heads prevents their arms from being within the x-ray imaging field once immobilized. Additionally, it further reduces the patient's mobilization.

Step 4: Close the Supports

Once the patient is within the Pigg-O-Stat and their arms are raised above their head, it is time to move onto the immobilization processes. Close the supports around the patient as close as possible without physically harming the patient. Lock the supports into place.

Note that closely closing the supports to the patient's body decreases the patient's mobilization and when done properly, does not cause physical harm to the patient.

Step 5: Immobilize the Patient's Head

Once the supports are closed around the patient immobilizing their body movement, it is time to immobilize their head. Head immobilization is completed using the leather strap located on the Pigg-O-Stat's supports. Bring the patient's head forward in order to line it up with the patient's body (the patient's body and head should be completely upright). Secure the leather strap from the left-side support to the right-side support so that it is tight enough that the patient is unable to freely move their head.

Note that closely securing the leather strap does not cause physical harm to the patient and prevents accidental self-harm of the patient.

Step 6: The Final Look

Shown here is the outcome of following the steps provided. Notice that the patient does not have enough space within the Pigg-O-Stat to escape from its restraints. Lack of free space within the Pigg-O-Stat prevents patient self-harm and results in better radiographic imagery.
