REAMARK: if you want to shutdown xp automatically then go to my previous instructabel...

Step 1: Opening Up the Task Scheduler...

For this Instructabel i am using Windows Vista Home Edition . click on the Start button, ike Windows XP you’ll find the Task Scheduler under the Start Button -> Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools -> Schedule tasks.

Here’s the new Vista Task Scheduler as shown in the image below. It is more complicated looking for average users than the Task Scheduler in Windows XP.

Step 2: Making the Task...

In the Actions column on the right, click Create Basic Task…

You’ll see the following window and I’ve already filled in the Name and Description of our task as shown in the picture below...
now fill in the name and the description of the task that you want to do which is in this case an automatic shutdown...

Step 3: Setting Triger and Date for Your Task...

After clicking Next you’ll see the Task Trigger screenas shown below. if you are like me and want to shut down your Vista PC in the middle of the night, every night so you have to pick daily. You can choose any time that suits you of course...

now after you have set the trigger, click next and the next screen you’ll see is the Start Date and Time screen as shown below in the second image.

Step 4: Set the Action and the Start a Program Screen

after you click next you will get the action screen as shown in the picture below...
choose Let’s Start a program and click next.

then you will get the start a program screen as shown in the picture below...

type in the Program/script input box the following C:\Windows\System32\Shutdown.exe

in the add arguments input box put /s as shown in the figue below

and then click next

Step 5: Edit the Summary Screen...

now fill in the text boxes in the same way they are typed in in the image below, nevertheless you can put in the trigger text box what best suites you of course...
after you fill them up click finish...

Step 6: PRESTO!

after you have created this shutdown task, you can continue your work and downloads until windows vista reaches the time you had specified when you made the task, when the time you specified comes, vista's task fires off and starts to automatic shut down. A window pops up telling you that Windows will shut down in less than a minute(as shown in the figue below..). You can click on the Close button but that will just close that window and Windows itself will continue to shut down!
GOOD LUCK
