Introduction: Laptop Wall Mount

About: I'm a woodworker who makes fun woodworking projects in my garage and shares them with the world!

I made this Laptop Wall Mount for my 17" laptop out of scrap maple and walnut. This is an easy and inexpensive way to mount your laptop onto a wall. The articulating arm provides a wide range of movement for positioning the laptop at different angles. Click here to view my blog post where you can download the FREE plan.

Watch my video, then follow these step-by-step instructions to make one for yourself!

Supplies: Hardwood, plywood, 1/4" bolts, washers, nylock nuts, screws, nails, wood glue, sandpaper, wood finish.

Tools: Saw, drill, screwdriver, wrenches, brad nailer.

Step 1: Download the FREE Plan

This wall mount is designed to hold my HP 17" laptop that weights about 6lbs. If you have a larger or heavier laptop, you should adjust the dimensions of these parts to hold the extra weight so that your laptop doesn't take a nasty fall! Also, it's probably not a good idea to lean or sit on it either - just sayin'.

Step 2: Cut the Parts

I cut the parts using my table saw and band saw, but you can use a jig saw or scroll saw as well. It's important that the holes are drilled as straight as possible, so I recommend using a drill press. You could use a drill if you use a block or square to drill as straight as possible.

Note: If the holes are crooked, it will be difficult to bolt the articulating arm together and it may cause the laptop to lean to one side or the other.

Step 3: Assemble the Platform

I used 1/2" Baltic Birch plywood and a strip of walnut for the platform. The walnut strip is glued and nailed onto the front to keep the laptop from sliding off.

Step 4: Apply Wood Finish

I sprayed all of the parts with satin Deft Clear Wood Finish. It dries fast and a few light coats will protect the wood.

Step 5: Assemble the Wall Mount

Assemble the wall mount using the bolts, washers, nuts, and screws that are listed in the PDF plan.

Start by mounting the E-shaped piece to the wall. Notice that I added a large piece of walnut between the E-shaped piece and the wall to spread out the force. Also, I glued on some walnut strips to strengthen the E-shaped piece, since the grain direction of the E could cause the horizontal bits to break off under too much leverage.

Attach the longer pair of arms, followed by the shorter arm. Attach the small vertical piece to the short arm. Attach the two platform supports to the short arm, then attach the platform with screws.

Tip: Drill pilot holes for screws so that the wood does not split.

Step 6: Insert a Stop Screw for the Tilting Mechanism

To keep the platform from tilting too far forward and dumping your laptop onto the ground, tilt the platform as far forward as you will need, then insert a stop screw into the vertical piece to stop it from tilting forward.

Step 7: Use Your Laptop

Set your laptop on the platform. Make sure the wall mount is sturdy and holds your laptop safely. Enjoy your new Laptop Wall Mount and thanks for checking out my project!
