Introduction: Need a Washer?

About: Retired Millwright/Haz Mat Specialist; Apprentice instructor; technical writer.

Gone are the days of the brown paper bags from the hardware store with mechanical fastening devices sold by the pound...taken home and placed in a secure jar or labeled bin. Now, we are inundated with bubble packs of fasteners, stored in different fashions.

We all find ourselves in the dilemma of needing a washer with just the right sized hole, not a standard bubble pack 100 piece, but a handful for that one certain project.

Step 1: The One Cent Solution When You Need a Washer

You'll need the following:
A clamp

A drill

A drill bit (sized according to the hole you need)

A coin

Step 2: Secure With Clamp

Use the clamp to secure the coin to a piece of waste wood and to your work surface leaving enough room to drill a hole in the center.

Step 3: Drill the Hole

Using the drill, drill a hole in the center of the coin. Check to see if the size is right for your use. If not, use the next size larger drill bit. Re-clamp and re-drill.
