Introduction: Photomicrography

Inspired by Nikon's Small World

Nikon’s Small World is regarded as the leading forum for showcasing the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the light microscope.

This tutorial shows how to take awesome shots of the tiny microscopic world

Equipment needed:

  • A Trinocular Microscope with a 40X magnification should be enough
  • DSLR camera
  • Photo Editing Software (Photoshop recommended)

Step 1: How to Take the Shots and Import Into Photoshop

  • To get the best possible resolution and good quality it is necessary to take many shots and joint them to one single shot with the panorama function and finally reduce the size of the final shot.
  • If the object is not flat enough like for example a match take also some shots with different focal point and then use the focus stacking option in Photoshop To learn more about focus stacking:

This way you may get absolutely high resolution and clear images

To joint shots in Photoshop select all shots in Lightroom -> Edit in/Merge to Panorama in Photoshop, choose Auto Layout

To use focus stacking select all Layers -> Edit -> Auto-blend Layers

Step 2: Editing the Shot

How to remove chromatic aberration:

  • Duplicate the Layer
  • Set Filter/Blur/Gaussian Blur use Radius between 20 and 30
  • Set current Layer to Mode Color
  • Add mask and fill black
  • Paint white over mask to remove chromatic aberration

How to sharpen the image:

  • Duplicate the Layer
  • Set Filter/Other/High Pass use Radius between 3 and 5
  • Set current Layer to Mode Soft Light

I'd like to share a little something about taking a macro with a celphone. Please, understand that what i will say here should be taken as advise for a make shift, non-ideal situation, &/or for people that want to capture an image of the tiny world but cannot afford or have no access to conventional equipment. Because, of course there is no comparison to using a true camera with nice lenses to the following sugestion if using a cell phone; however, i have found myself in the field without 'real' camera gear. When this is the case, and i see something small i want to document, i use my galaxy active phone and macro lense attachment to take a "burst shot". The tiny world is available even if nice equipment is not.

At least in the past two tries for me, the download link for this instructable is malfunctioning. This should not be a 16kb download, except it is - with a Title and a small image. Sad.

Give it a try again - I believe the pdf download file just needed to re-sync for some reason. It appears to contain the full instructable now.
