Introduction: QUAD TRAINING MISSION 3 - Four Flight Targets

In this instructable, you'll use the takeoff and landing skills you've acquired in the previous two lessons. You'll add the ability to fly left and right to your skill set.

Prerequisites:

  1. Have a quadcopter.
  2. Know how to turn on quadcopter and bind controller.
  3. A safe area to fly (see below).

This instruction is going to differ from the previous two in that each flight maneuver will not be outlined individually.

The next step will contain an overview map and each step you'll perform. The video above shows all of the steps in the Flying Quads simulator as well.

Please adhere to the safety rules:

  • If at anytime you see other aircraft in your area, land immediately.
  • If at anytime you feel the quad is out of control, return both sticks to the neutral (center) position.
  • Check that you're over a safe area and then land by reducing the throttle (pulling the left throttle downward) until the quad lands.
  • Do not fly near other people or pets.If you see people approaching your flying area, kindly ask them to keep a safe distance away.
  • If they continue towards your flying area, land immediately.
  • While learning, keep the front of the quad facing AWAY from you. This orientation will make the most sense at first because the quad will respond in the direction you push the controls. Turn yourself to keep this orientation if needed.
  • Don't turn the quad with left stick (yaw) just yet. If you do so, you'll change the orientation of the quad and may get confused.

This instruction is not written for a specific quad. Some quads are more stable than others and will lend themselves to learning more than others. A quad with a GPS (Sky Viper GPS, Promark GPS, DJI) should stay in place when the sticks are in their neutral position - this is best for learning. Quads without a GPS will most likely wander and require correction with the controls. You can use these types of quads, but they will be harder to control.

Step 1: Mission Flight Instructions

Here are the steps to complete the mission.

Fly to the first target:

  1. Take off using the left joystick forward.
  2. Ascend to approximately 10ft and hover.
  3. Push the right stick forward until the quad is lined up with the first target.
  4. Push the right stick to the left until the quad is over the first target.
  5. Hover for a moment, then descend and land on the first target.

Fly to the second target:

  1. Take off using the left joystick forward.
  2. Ascend to approximately 10ft and hover.
  3. Push the right stick forward until the quad is lined up with the second target.
  4. Push the right stick to the right until the quad is over the second target.
  5. Hover for a moment, then descend and land on the second target.

By now you should be getting a good feel for how the quad responds to the the left and right (roll) controls. Continue the mission until you have landed on all the targets and returned back to the original take off location.

Practice this mission numerous times. Switch up the order in which you fly to the targets. Some options could be:

  • Fly to the targets in reverse order.
  • Fly to the second target, then the first, then the third, then the fourth, then home.
  • Make up your own sequence.

Remember, the goal is to not turn using the left stick (yaw). You will learn to turn using yaw in the next lesson. If you feel the quad has been turned and isn't responding to the left and right (roll) controls as expected, land the quad and restart the mission from the initial take off point.

Happy flying!
