Introduction: Rustic Wine Rack

My cousin and I decided to build this rustic wine rack as a birthday present for a mutual friend of ours.

After we decided to build a wine rack, we began thinking about the design. We wanted her to be able to place at on the floor/on a table or to hang it to the wall. Therefor we built a base which is easy to remove.

Let's get started!

Step 1: Materials

We did not need that many materials and tools:

Materials:

  • three planks (2000mm x 23mm x 140mm)
  • screws and glue
  • wood stain

Tools:

  • cordless drill (with drills and bits)
  • chop saw
  • table saw
  • brush and an old cloth (for the stain)
  • sanding paper

That's everything we used.

Step 2: Building the Rack

(all screw holes were pre-drilled)

We began by building the rack itself. Therefor we cut three planks to 44 cm in length and 10 cm in width and divided one of it to 12 and 32 cm.

The planks were connected with screws and glue at a right angle. We always made sure there was an overhang of 10 cm - this made the spots where the bottle's bottoms sit 10 cm x 10 cm big.

Step 3: Building the Backboard

The next thing to do was to build the backboard by aligning the rack on two boards in a way we liked and marking the required length.

We cut the boards to this length and put them on the ground, frontside down. We put the rack on it in our desired design and draw it's outlines on the boards.

Then we put the first board on it the right way and attached it with screws and then did the same with the second board.

If we'd want to hang it on the wall, the building process now would be finished.

Step 4: Building the 'leg'

Because we wanted the rack to stand at a 10 degree angle, we cut this angle on the bottom of the backboard and took one leftover board to build the 'leg'.

We built the leg by dividing the board at a 10 degree angle and attached it to the backboard with two screws.

Step 5: Building and Attaching the Base Plate

If you'd want to, you could leave the rack like this - it could stand like this on its own. But because of design aspects, we decided to build a base plate.

The base plate is 35 cm x 18 cm and is created from two layers of wood, which are arranged orthogonal to each other and are connected with screws from the underside.

To connect the base plate to the rack, we arranged the parts in a way we liked and screwed them together from the underside.

Step 6: Test Fitting and Staining

Now the building process was finished and we took some wine bottles to test, if everything fits the way we wanted - it did.

It was time to stain the rack now. We sanded everything down a little bit - but not too much, to keep the rustic look. After that we put the stain on with a brush and spread it with an old cloth. Now everything was finished and we let it dry overnight.

Step 7: Finished Wine Rack

The next day the stain was dry and we put some bottles on it again.

We think it looks pretty awesome, please feel free to comment.
