I wanted to shim my laptop to A. angle the keyboard to make it easier for me to reach all the keys and B. to help keep it a little cooler. I didn't have any money in my bank account to buy something so I decided to just make one with some shims, screening I found out at the garbage and an old scarf. It's not the prettiest thing on the planet but who's going to see it anyway? Not me since it's under my laptop. This is my first instructable and creating the instructable took me way longer than it did to make the silly shim. I think making the shim took me 20 minutes.

Step 1: Materials

What you'll need:
1. 4 shims
2. some screening
3. a staple gun
4. hot glue gun
5. duct tape*
6. scissors*
7. some fabric for grip and padding**

*please note: the duct tape and scissors are not pictured because I forgot to get them out until I needed them

** I cut up an old fleece scarf. fleece is good because it's thick and you don't have to sew the edges

Step 2: 1. Glue Shims Together

Glue two shims together with thick ends together (sorry for the fuzzy photos - I'm not very good at holding the camera steady with my left hand)

Step 3: 2. Staple the Screening to the Shims

Lay the screening over the shims leaving about an inch or so extra at the thick end.
Staple the screening to each set of shims once at the top of the thick end and then one more time a little lower. Be careful that your second staples are still high enough up and not coming through the other side.
The distance between the shims is up to you but be sure you have them level with each other. I used the floorboard to line them up.

Step 4: 4. Fold Over Thick End and Staple

Fold the screening at the thick end over and staple it to the ends of the shims.
You'll want to kink the screening between the shims to be sure it stays straight.

Step 5: 5. Fold Under and Trim Thick End

flip upside down and cut a notch in the screening on the inside of the thick end of the shims.
fold the center excess screening over (the fold will keep it from scratching your surface under your laptop as well as strengthen the support between the shims).
trim the excess ends off so they don't hang over the edges
I did also put some duct tape around the ends of the shims which you can see in the finished pic. I don't think it's necessary though

Step 6: 6. Fold Trim and Tape the Skinny End

do the same to the skinny end as you did in step 5 folding over the screen between the shims and trimming the ends. I put a dab of glue on the screening where it wasn't stapled to be sure I trimmed it straight (be careful not to burn yourself - it's called a hot glue gun for a reason).
Cut your duct tape to fit between the shims and tape the skinny end down folding the duct tape over the end.
