Here is where I am at with this design;I keep the entire screened surface covered in a layer or two of straw. I have a few plastic vegetable crates in there (with straw as well) off to the sides for nesting. I also put the roosting bar [from the first coop] back in but they didn't touch it.At first they laid eggs all over the place, but they didn't slow down one bit. 4 chickens in, and 4 eggs out everyday. Now they lay all of the eggs in just one of the crates, but they don't poop in it [like the first coop], so it stays clean. They avoid the other crates. They tend to huddle up at night in the middle of the ship.Every morning I collect the eggs, prop open the Plasma Gas Vent hatch [when it's not pouring rain] and let the ship 'air' out. I go around and open the main hatch, grab the straw…

Thanks for the kind and informative comment! It was a fun project and a golden opportunity to clean out my pack-rat bins. You asked where the USS Cluck Bucket landed...here's her landing pad coordinates: 37°57'11.6"N 13°39'38.2"E (just paste these in Google Maps)

The real question SnowKnitty...did you do the sing-along for the start of the Instructable? If not, read it again! :-)Your suggestions are duly noted and very much appreciated. I understand the need for good ventilation, to which the cockpit [tank lid] still unscrews and can be removed if need be. I even have a old fan screen that fits right in the hole. I normally leave the rear hatch (Main Entrance Hatch) open 24/7 but will close it on realy cold, windy nights. As for chicken poop, I like to use straw as bedding. That way I can pick up the whole pile of poop using the straw underneath and fling it to another galaxy far, far away. I left drain holes on both sides of the ship so I can hose it out if the stench gets too bad.On a personal note, i'm glad you enjoyed the Instructable. I have …

Thanks for the kudos. I was thinking of making the oval/parabolic oven more rigid by attaching board to the exterior, but after my last use I may not want to improve its efficiency beyond what I have...

You're right, we are closer to the 35th (what was I thinking?!); about the same as Virginia. Actual it really doesn't matter which parallel you live on. This thing will work in the Artic. The trick is just to keep it pointed directly at the sun. If the sun is low, you can leave it out on the deck or a small table. If the sun I high in the sky just put a door wedge, or other 2" thick object along the bottom edge just to tilt it up towards the sun. The trick is to keep it out of the wind.

Cast iron would work, but it would take f o r e v e r to heat up. If you don't trust aluminum just use some thin-wall SS pots like I did.
I think the oven bag idea is a good idea, but ensure you cover the whole oven. You cannot let any breeze get into the oven as it will not get hot enough. Let me know if you try that. (I don't have access to these large oven bags over here in Sicily).
I don't think I said spray paint inside the cookware. I said: "You'll need to thoroughly wash the exterior of the cookware, and if it's aluminum scuff it up with some scotchbrite or some steel wool. Then, wash it again with a good degreasing soap. Let it dry very thoroughly and then spray it with 2 or 3 good, even coats of flat black enamel spray paint."I think it should be obvious to the most casual observer that you [need only] paint the exterior of the cookware. Painting the exterior would not do you any good; besides, like you said, it's not a good idea.
View Instructable »I know that if you made a 'better' parabolic shape and used more reflective material it would perform better, however keep in mind that if you make it too 'perfect' you are defeating the purpose. It is designed as a slow cooker. If it gets too hot you have to monitor and time your food as you cook it, and remove it just in the right time.As a side note, I'm in Sicily and do not have access to what you listed at walmart. I would think that if you wanted to make the rectangular oven using the flat, reflective material would work best instead of the windshield cover, but it would cost more. If you are going to use foil, just use the Heavy duty aluminum foil [shiny side inwards]. The tape would not be as good and considerably more expensive.

Sorry I missed your question...I think they where 24 amp/hr batteries. They were also old-school sealed lead acid batteries. You can get better than that nowadays. I just used the right size bateries for the space allowed.

Many municipalities frown on tiny homes within city limits (especially the mobile type on wheels) however most of them will allow them be set up on a lot with a permanent structure AS LONG AS the sewer system can handle the additional flow. Most cities refer theses as 'in-law' apartments. Some cities, such as Raleigh NC, will not allow container homes within the city limits UNLESS it is an 'in-law' home and no bigger than 300 sq ft. Tacoma was the same way. Fresno (on the other hand) is a very tiny home friendly city and allows them as a primary structure/residence.The tiny container home can usually fall under the 'modular/mobile home [on a permanent foundation]' so if they allow them they allow this type of tiny home. That being said, it's been my impression that the vast majority of tin…

I think that if you use the tool-dip instead of electrical tape it will work out just fine. It will add more cost but if you have some laying around I would dip it. I didn't find the need to grind the corners down; they weren't that bad, and besides i was living in an apartment at the time and didn't have access to an angle grinder.
In a galaxy far, far away? 😆
