For a lightly less messy way to paint the base coat, you can use something called a paint glove. It's used to easily paint items like elaborate wrought iron. Check it out - they're fairly cheap and reusable.

You could possibly use pop rivets instead of soldering.
Instead of using the square nuts, you can use toggle bolts. Just push the toggle end through the hole, and it springs out to catch on the other side.
