Introduction: 7 Strand Challah Braid

I learned this with one simple online tutorial, and I think everyone can too!

Feel free to check out this helpful video, which was my inspiration for this instructable.

Step 1: Dough

Make it. Learn how here

Step 2: Strands

Separate the dough into 7 equal strands. This might take more than one try, but you can always grab a little nugget from a fatter piece to add to a more skimpy one... Play around until you have what you need!

Step 3: Join

Lay the strands parallel to each other, grab the ends on one side and bunch them up to form the "butt" of the challah. Leave the rest of the strands sprawled out on the table.

*Pro tip: While you're doing this, make sure to cover the work surface with lots of additional flour to prevent the dough from sticking!

Step 4: Braid

Start with the outermost strand on the left side of the challah. Pick it up over the adjacent strand, and pass it under the following two strands. If you were to label each strand aphlabetically, the order would change from

B C D A E F G

Next, grab the outermost strand on the right side and repeat: over one and under two.

Continue this motion switching sides until you've reached the bottom.

    My late Grandma used to make huge challas in a roasting pan. A single slice cut in half was enough for a large sandwich. I recall she measured everything by the handful, one of my relatives tried measuring what she was adding to the dough before it went into the bowl, but the results we were less than satisfactory. The instructable well done and brought back memories of an extended family which has since fractured unrecognizabliy.
