My mom has pretty well everything she needs so it is always a challenge to figure out what to get her for christmas. She does like plants, but it seems impersonal to just buy her flowers or something. This year, I thought I could make her something she can use, so I decided to make a candy bowl.

Step 1: Create and Print a Pattern

I use the pattern maker at scrollmania. It is very easy to use and has tutorials. Create and print your pattern but make sure that the rings are thick enough that they don't break easily, I made mine 3/8" (0.375"). Use 2 way tape to tape the pattern to your wood blank. Another tool on the scollmania is the angle calculator to help set the cut angle on your saw. I am using 3/4" pine and 3/8" rings so I need a angle of 27°

Step 2: Cut Rings

I used my scrollsaw because some of the curves are too sharp for a bandsaw and just cut out each ring. I cut through and glued the rings back together but if you have pinless blades, you can drill a small pilot hole and keep the rings intact

Step 3: Glue Rings Together

Kinda self-explanatory. Glue 2 rings and clamp till set, glue one more and clamp till set. Repeat till you run out of rings. After I put most of it together, I realized that the bottom was going to be too small so I left off the bottom section and glued 1/8" birch plywood to the bottom instead. I also had enough left on the blank to cut a top ring that is round on the outside and used my belt sander to match the ring below it.

Step 4: Sanding

As you can see in the pics, the rings won't line up perfectly, so some sanding will be needed.

Step 5: Finishing

Once I had my bowl the way I wanted it, I applied 2 coats of stain. After the stain dried, I used beeswax/mineral oil to seal the wood. Keep in mind that seal takes about 3 days to dry
