For our Dremel Build Night we knew we would have a lot of families in attendance so we wanted an easy project the kids could do and give them hand-on experience with the tool. The kids at our workshop drew designs on ceramic tile, etched the design & then added color to make their designs pop! I wanted to try to create my own geeky pint glasses so I picked up a glass for $0.50 at Goodwill and used the design from my Build Night Sample to create the glass.

Step 1: What You Need:

Dremel Rotary Tool
Dremel Bit 84922--Silicon Carbide Grinding Stone
Pint Glass or Ceramic Tile
Tape
Sharpie (if you are going to work on tile)
Crayola Markers (optional for ceramic tile)
Your Design

Step 2: Prepare Your Item

I found this cool Space Invader online, printed out a copy and then cut it out. I liked the straight lines and thought it was an ideal size & shape for a first time project.

For the pint glass, place your design inside the glass and move it around until you get it to where you would like it to be . I taped it into place so it would not move while working and so it stayed up against the glass.
For the ceramic tile, place the design on the tile and trace it with the Sharpie. I used the Sharpie since it was easy to see on the white tile and would not rub off on my hand while working.

Step 3: Etch Your Design

Now you are ready to get etching! Attach bit 84922 to your Dremel and you are ready to go.

Holding the Dremel similar to how you would a pencil, you will basically be tracing your design onto your glass or tile. You do not need to press hard as the bit does all the work, you are just guiding it over the design and if you press too hard you glass or tile may break. Make sure you have good light and stop to dust off your work as you go so you can see if there are any parts you need to go over again.

Once you are done etching your design, remove your pattern from inside the glass so you can see if there are any places you need to touch up and that it looks how you want it to look.

If you etched your design on a white or light color tile you can color over your design with a Crayola Marker and then wipe away the excess marker. The marker will stain your design so it stands out on the white tile.
