Introduction: Vinyl Customization - Awesome Desk Widget

About: Maker in Residence at Laney College

Desk toys are a fun and entertaining way to show your coworkers that you have a interesting and creative personality. Here's a quick and innovative way to customize an ordinary set of chattering teeth into something with a even more character.

If you run into any issues with the vinyl part of this project, then refer to Vinyl Cutting Tutorial.

Required Items:

  • Vinyl cutter
  • Chattering Teeth (I bought mine from the Dollar Tree)
  • Adhesive vinyl
  • Transfer Tape
  • Scissors
  • Tweezers
  • Box cutter or X-ACTO blade
  • Calipers, Measuring tape, or Ruler
  • Card (i.e. credit card)

**Optional Items**

  • Cloth or paper towels
  • Sandpaper
  • Acetone

  • Plastic polishing chemicals

Step 1: *Optional Step* - Remove Manufacturer Label

Use sandpaper to remove any extruded manufacturer label or trace of "made in china." After sanding the extruded area continue to sand the rest of the surface until the entire area is evened out and smooth.

Step 2: *Optional Step* - Polishing

Apply acetone and/or plastic scratch remover to refinish the surface. The surface may not come out perfect, but as long as it's smooth and relatively shiny then it's good enough for me.

Note: If the surface is evenly flat then it makes for a better space to apply your vinyl design.

Step 3: Vinyl Customization

Break out the vinyl and begin customizing your widget. I recommenced doing something interesting with the eyes and/or mouth (i.e. money eyes or braces).

For instruction on applying vinyl for this step refer to Vinyl Cutting Tutorial.

Step 4: Wind It Up

  • Place it on your desk
  • Wind it up
  • Annoy your co-workers
