In this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt I will show you how to Make Calzones using frozen bread dough. It is simple and easy to make, and you can easily swap out the frozen bread dough with home made pizza dough. Click on the video below to watch the tutorial, or view the steps.

A couple loafs of frozen bread dough

one can of olives

one jar of your favorite pizza sauce or use home made pizza sauce

one bag of shredded mozzarella cheese

one pound of ground Italian sausage

***You can switch out these ingredients with whatever you like. Add pepperoni, bacon, ham, to the sausage for an all meat Calzone!

Step 1: Preheat Oven

Take frozen bread dough out of freezer, and let it thaw and rise. (follow instructions on package) Now, let's preheat our oven to 350 degrees F.

Step 2: Cook Sausage

Take the sausage and place it in a skillet with a little bit of oil in it. Now let's add salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Cook it on medium to medium hi heat. Once it is thoroughly cooked, drain the excess grease. Save it for sausage gravy if you like.

Step 3: Prep Bread Dough

Now we take about a third of the bread dough loaf and place it on a counter that has been lightly dusted with flour. Then roll out the dough nice and thin with a rolling pin.

Step 4: Add Toppings

Now let's add our toppings. First spread out a bit of pizza sauce. Then add your shredded mozzarella cheese. Next, add your olives, then finally your Italian sausage.

Step 5: Fold Dough With Toppings

Now let's fold our dough over the toppings, and pinch down the sides to form our uncooked calzone. Next follow those steps for the rest of your calzones. Then place them in the oven. Bake them for 20 to 30 minutes. Check them after 15 minutes. You can baste the top of them with egg whites if you like.

Step 6: Done

When they look like this they are done. They will look a little different if you basted the top with egg whites. It will give them a nice glossy finish look.

Step 7: Cost Break Down

The costs will very depending on where you live and how much your ingredients cost. This batch cost me $1.36 per calzone to make. To buy one at a restaurant or other places that sell them, they would run anywhere from $4 to 8$ or even more, here in the States. Huge Savings to make them at home! And they are easy, a great activity for the kids. I have made them on group dates before, and everyone had a blast making them, and of course eating them! :)
