I love a good instant-gratification project, and this one is perfect for when you need a quick knit. Knit in bulky yarn, this simple cowl works up in no time. With just a button and buttonhole, a basic knitted rectangle becomes a stylish accessory that’s sure to keep you warm in the cold breeze.

Step 1: Supplies

You Will Need:
Approx. 120 yards of #5 Bulky Weight yarn

US Size 10.5 (6.5 mm) Knitting Needles

1 Button, about 1 ⅛” in diameter

Small amount of a thinner, coordinating yarn (for sewing on the button) and a Yarn Needle or Blunt Tapestry Needle that will fit through the holes in the button, OR

Sewing Needle and Thread to match the cowl (for sewing on the button)

Scissors

Yarn Needle Or Blunt Tapestry Needle with a Large Eye

Step 2: Size and Gauge

Skill Level: Advanced Beginner

Gauge: 9 sts = 3” (7.6 cm) and 12 rows = 3” (7.6 cm) in stitch pattern, after blocking

Finished Size: 23” (61 cm) long by 10 ½” (30.5 cm) wide

Abbreviations:sts: stitches K: knit P: purl P2tog: purl two stitches together YO: yarn over

Step 3: The Pattern

Note: At the end of every row, you should always have 32 sts.

Cast on 32 sts.

Row 1-4: *K1, P1* across.

Row 5-8: *P1, K1* across.

Repeat Rows 1-8 until you have a total of 88 rows.

Row 9: K1, P2tog, YO, P1. (This creates the buttonhole.) *K1, P1* across remaining sts.

Row 10-12: *K1, P1* across.

Bind off, weave in ends.

Step 4: Finishing

To Block:
If using Acrylic or other synthetic yarn, pin item out to finished measurements on an ironing board. Hold a steaming iron or garment steamer 2”-3” over the surface of the knitting, moving the iron / steamer around so all the knitted fabric is steamed. Allow to cool and dry.

OR

If using natural fiber yarn, pin item out to finished measurements on foam blocking mats. Spray with water until the knitted fabric is damp all over. Allow to dry.

Thread the thinner yarn scrap through the eye of your thinner yarn needle. (If using sewing needle, thread it with a length of your sewing thread.)

Place the button at the center of the cast-on edge of the cowl, and move it in about 1 ½” from that edge.

Sew the button to the cowl in that position, and secure with a knot. “Weave in” the yarn / thread tail.
