Introduction: CNC Engraved Wooden Bangle
I had just begin the journey on INSTRUCTABLES. It was not easy as the way it looks. I had selected the wood working because of making a bangle out of wood, it seems to be something unique. So here i present my work.
Step 1: Tools and Material's
- Cylindrical wooden log
- Hand drill
- Hexo blade
- Flat planner tool
- Digital vernier caliper
- 1mm carbide drilling tool
- single tooth angular tool
- Angular planner
- Hole saw
- 80 grid sanding paper
- 150 grid sanding paper
- 220 grid sanding paper
- Pencil or marker
- Protective glasses
Step 2: Pre Measuring
- We bought a cylindrical log of Acacia Wood from our local vendor with a diameter of 93.46 mm.
- Later drilled out a hole by using hole saw drill of diameter 57.14 mm and thickness of 36 mm.
- After shaping the object will get the desired thickness of roughly 10 mm which is required.
Step 3: Shaping
- We have to trim down the thickness.
- Attach the work piece on the shaft of the motor.
- Using the flat planner tool to trim down the extra wood from the log.
- Keep measuring the thickness.
- Trim it till the thickness remains to 10 mm roughly.
Step 4: Sizing
- Shaped work piece is too big in width to wear.
- Measure the width of the bangle which is desired.
- We measured it to 35 mm roughly.
- Mark down the size with pencil or marker.
- Now separate it by sketching lines on the work piece using the angular tooth tool as shown in the picture.
- Cut down the sketched lines using hexo blade.
- Finally the job is done of shaping and sizing and we get our work piece having width:35 mm thickness: 12 mm inner diameter: 57.14 mm outer diameter: 69.14 mm.
Step 5: Grinding
- Thickness of the bangle is 12 mm there's extra 2 mm left.
- Grind it using 80 grid sanding paper and 150 grid sanding paper.
- Polish it with 220 grid or else you can use a higher grid for polishing.
- Doing the same with the sides.
- Blunt down the edges using angular planner tool as shown in the picture.
- Edges are to sharp that it can bring cuts on the wrist so blunting the edges is necessary.
- Bangle is ready for engraving, properly shaped and perfectly polished.
Step 6: Designing and G-CODE
- Designing is the main part on witch our CNC is working.
- We used corel draw X3 for designing.
- Design the art of your own desire. We made a flower and its petals using the line tool in corel draw.
- Sketch the straight line, then make the nodes in that line with the shaper tool.
- Shaper tool locates 2nd in the column below the picking arrow.
- And an arc can also be created from a straight line by selecting the curve option which is a sub option in a shaper tool.
- After making the design we can make offset of the design as shown in the picture.
- Offset is a method of copying the same thing or element on opposite side with equal distances.
- We made our design in three colour because our G-code generator has the 3 different depths option.
- Now our design is ready we have to make the G-code for this design.
- As shown in the picture we took different depths in different colours maximum of 4 mm, 5 mm, and 6 mm in colours cyan, green and red respectively.
- Decide your own desired feed rate and depths.
Step 7: CNC Information
- Its a 3 axis CNC machine
- Z-axis is a spindle (servo motor drill) of 10000 rpm
- Y-axis is in a rotational motion
- X-axis is in a linear motion
- 3 stepper motors of full step drive is connected to x-axis, y-axis, z-axis individually
Step 8: CNC Software
- We are using the normal G-code operating software named as "Mach 3 Mill"
- It is the easiest software for beginners, just load the G-code which is created before, adjust the spindle location. Set the desired percentage feed rate and start the work.
Step 9: Attaching the Work Piece to the CNC and Working
- Bind the colet having slightly smaller diameter then our inner diameter of bangle to the rotational y-axis shaft, now attach the bangle on the colet and tight it till the bangle stops moving freely on the colet.
- Now attach the 1 mm carbide drill to the spindle, slide it to the centre of the bangle and lift it up according to the depth which should be carved down on the bangle
- Bangle is now ready for engraving. Now turn on the spindle and run the G-code.
Step 10: Final Dusting and Polishing
- Drill bit of the spindle forms the chips on the surface of the bangle it is necessary to clean it out
- Take any hard brush and rub it on the surface to remove bigger chips, the smaller ones which are hard to remove or get stuck in the corners were removed by sanding or buffing
- Sand it till the surface get smooth. now polish it with wax or apply wood varnish on it. Allow it to dry for 1 hour. Now our bangle is ready to wear.
