Introduction: How to Create a Cardboard Vault Door

Items/Materials Needed: Lots of cardboard, (the more the merrier,) hot glue & hot glue gun, a pencil, scissors or an Exacto knife, one sheet of blank paper, five lollipop sticks, a compass and a ruler.

Step 1: Starting Simple

Take your paper and fold it evenly into four squares. Cut out the four squares once you're finished.

Step 2: Starting the Lock Mechanism

Take a pencil and roll the piece of paper up using it. Once finished, tape the piece of paper so it won’t unravel. Leave the rolled-up paper on the pencil and roll up another piece of paper around it. Repeat one more time after. Once you have three rolled-up paper pieces, you can take out the pencil and separate the pieces. You should get something like the pictures up top.

Step 3: Lock Mechanism Cont.

Get your compass and draw out three circles all with a radius of 4cm. Poke a hole in the center of all three of them, big enough to fit your biggest paper roll. You can poke the hole with your compass’ pointy side, then make it bigger with your pencil. If the paper roll still doesn't fit, you can even use scissors. Just be careful. Your end product should look like the photo above.

Step 4: Lock Mechanism Cont.

Get your ruler again, and make a line 1.5 cm from the edge of your circles. Then, cut it out as you see at the top.

Step 5: Almost Done the Lock Mechanism

Cut out 4 small square cardboard pieces 1.5cm x 2cm. Hot glue one of them to one of your cardboard circles on the edge like the big image on the left. Then hot glue two onto your second cardboard circle on opposite sides like the bottom right image above Lastly, hot glue the last one on your last cardboard circle like the top right image above. Make sure you don’t hot glue them at the same spot on each circle, otherwise the lock mechanism won’t work.

Step 6: Finishing the Lock Mechanism

Take your biggest paper roll and cut it twice. Make sure both pieces are 2.5cm long. Slip one into one of the cardboard circles and another into the circle with two squares. Take your thinnest paper roll and slip that into the only cardboard circle without a paper roll. Take your last full paper roll and slide it all the way down your smallest paper roll. Make sure you hot glue all the paper rolls to the cardboard EXCEPT the middle paper roll. Now, connect all of them. MAKE SURE THE CIRCLE WITH TWO SQUARES IS IN THE MIDDLE. When you have them all together, try spinning the first circle. If the other ones spin after a bit of spinning, the lock mechanism works. If not, try pushing the circles closer. Try to make the cuts in each circle line up. That's how you'll unlock your vault.

Step 7: Making the Actual Lock.

This next part is important. Cut some cardboard into the shape of an L. The height should be 12cm and the length should be 11cm. Make another cardboard L just like the last one you made. Take a lollipop stick and slide it through like in the photo above. Keep sliding lollipop sticks through until you get the photo above. Make sure you add three lollipop sticks at the bottom there as I did. Otherwise, the lock might not work as efficiently.

Step 8: Making the Door to the Vault

Get a piece of cardboard and cut it so it's 26cm in length and 16cm in width. Cut a piece of cardboard so it's 25cm long and 2cm wide. Cut two pieces of cardboard so their 12cm long and 2cm wide. Place them like you see in the photo above on the left. Cut two pieces of cardboard 2cm long 1cm wide. Cut three pieces of cardboard 2.5cm long and 2cm wide. Cut a piece of cardboard 20cm long and 2cm wide. Hot glue the 20cm long piece to the 25 cm piece and put it as far right as you can. Hot glue two of the 2.5cm long pieces of cardboard together. Then, hot glue it to the end of the 25cm long piece, make sure it is as far to the left as it can be placed. Hot glue a 2cm long piece to it. Hot glue a 2.5cm long and a 2cm long together and then hot glue them to the 20cm long stick.

Step 9: Vault Door Cont.

Get a piece of cardboard that's 25.5cm long and 17cm wide. Poke a hole into it around 6.5cm from the top and 6cm from the right side. Poke another hole 6.5cm from the bottom and 9.5cm from the left. Place the joint lollipop stick of your "double L" into the top hole and the small paper roll side of your lock mechanic. You can add the lock numbers now and an open/locked switch like above. Add walls on the left and right side and the back. DON'T ADD THE ROOF UNTIL YOU FIGURE OUT WHAT YOUR CODE IS. Once you figure out your code, you can add your roof.

Step 10: A Door Hinge

Create an outline of your vault using cardboard pieces that are 2cm wide. Make sure two of them are 20 cm long and one 26cm long. Hot glue the longest piece to the top of your vault and the other two on the two sides. See the image above for more context. Cut another piece of cardboard that's 3cm wide and 8.5cm long. Fold it in half like the image above and hot glue one half to the right side of your vault door. This is how the door will open and close. Now, cut four pieces of cardboard 7cm long & 1.5cm wide and hot glue them on top of each other. Slide it into the bottom left corner of the vault door.

Step 11: Now You're Done!

Just glue a cardboard box together (it can be as big as you want)

Just remember to glue the hinge to whatever side it's on!
