Introduction: Cat Kibble Foraging Toy
Give your cats plenty of environmental enrichment. Let them forage for their kibble. It keeps them busy and happy, plus this method lets you customize your cat's toy for just about no cost.
Step 1: Supplies
- Empty, clean plastic jar (like from peanut butter or mayonnaise) with lid
- Exacto knife
Step 2: Cut a Hole, Add a Little Kibble, Screw on Lid
Cut a hole in the side of the jar a little bigger than the kibble size kitty is used to. Be very careful - do not cut yourself.
Fill with a kibble to desired level. Screw on the jar lid. Roll toward kitty, allowing a kib or 2 to fall out.
Done! Your nearly free cat toy is ready to roll. Literally.
Step 3: Notes
For newbie cats, you may want to cut multiple holes, or cut the hole(s) larger until they master the technique.
Another training technique is the shake the jar for kitty so that a few kibs release, and encourage kitty to roll the toy with his nose.
If you change brands of kibble, don't forget to check the hole size in existing toys. A jar that doesn't release kibble is a very sad joke.
If you use peanut butter jars like we do, be careful in the dishwasher. We have melted many jars.
These toys keep them busy when we are out of town.
Mix it up with differently shaped jars, like an ovoid Nutella-type jar, a giant Metamucil jar...
