Introduction: Chess Game From Scrap DIY
I have build a Chess Board and full set of pieces almost entirely from scrap.
Here is Youtube Link:https://youtu.be/hbImOJ87zCI
Step 1: Materials and Tools
Materials
- Dark Wood
- Light Wood
- Dowels different diameter
Tools:
- Table Saw
- Wood Glue
- Clamps
- Stain and Shellac
Step 2: Saw and Glue
Saw the Wood into 8 pieces each with dimension 5/4 x 10 in
Glue the pieces together to make the pattern.
Tip: try to glue everything flush to one surface it will help later.
Step 3: One More Time
Now saw the pieces for the 5/4 width and glue them together to get chess board.
Tip. Don't forget to check that you actually have 8x8 board and the right dark/light square orientation.
Step 4: Plane and Sand
Take you hand plane and plane the face of the board to get flash surface. If you have not messed up as me on the glue up stage otherwise you will have a long way to plane.
After the face is flat. plane the other side.
Take you sander/paper and sand the board.
Apply couple coats of shellac and wait. Sand the board more with higher grit.
Add some wax.
The board is Done!!!
Step 5: On Piece to Rule Them All.
take different size dowel and cut them to size.
you can do it as you like... or can follow the design I found here:

Step 6: The Pieces.
Explore the possibilities with wood and glue.
Step 7: Play and Enjoy
Now wait till everything is dry and play.

Cool idea!
An easier way of getting the different shade squares is get the large square of wood, sand it down, then measure up all the little squares and draw them on the wood, then varnish/stain them the different shades in the correct positioning.
