Chocolate Clay is one of the most fun and versatile sweet treats for crafty types who sometimes wander into the kitchen.

I'm by no means a chef, or even a semi-decent cook, but I do know art, and I LOVE to create and experiment.

I was first blown away with how simple this recipe is. I fully believe it's something everyone should have in their repertoire.

The only things you will need to try this Instructable for yourself are:

1lb of melting chocolates (you can use chocolate chips too if that's what you have around)

1/2 cup corn syrup

Microwave safe bowl

Mixing spoon or spatula

Parchment paper

Silicone molds

Step 1: Measure and Melt

  • Add roughly one pound of chocolate melts to a microwave safe bowl and heat at about 70% for 1 minute.
  • Stir
  • Heat at about 70% for 30 seconds
  • Stir
  • Repeat until chocolate is completely melted

It took us three times before we got fully melted chocolate. Every microwave is a bit different though. Yours might be faster or slower which is why it's best to do it in 30 second intervals.

Step 2: Mix Thoroughly

  • Add 1/2 cup Corn Syrup
  • Mix until the chocolate looks like the consistency of ice cream
  • When the chocolate starts to pull away from the sides of the bowl it is ready

It might be easier to use a circular bowl. Our squared one was the only size that fit a pound of chocolate. It wasn't hard to stir by any means, but circular would have been easier for the chocolate clay to pull away from.

Step 3: Set

  • Pour the chocolate onto a large sheet of parchment paper
  • Flatten it out so it cools faster
  • Turn up the ends and seal with paper clips
  • Set aside for a few hours, or overnight (must be completely cooled to harden)

The chocolate doesn't need to be sealed up air tight. but it does need to be closed enough that it doesn't completely dry up.

Step 4: Mold

  • Remove the chocolate from the parchment paper
  • Break off a piece and gently knead it in your hands until it starts to look and feel like clay
  • Push a small amount into each mold
  • Let the chocolate set for a few minutes before removing from the mold (I put mine in the freezer for about ten minutes)

Using silicone molds is definitely the easiest way to create unique chocolate pieces, but it's far from the only way. This recipe is great for chocolate sculptures, fondant style characters for cakes or cookies, or really anything you can do with clay.
