Introduction: Close Loop Hybrid Stepper Motor Driver and Nema 42 Stepper Testing

About: Sami is an electronic engineer, and has 20 years of experience in electronic systems, communication and radar system , I have passion to learn and share knowledge, I believe that sharing knowledge will improve…

Stepper motors are used wildly in many system such as robots, remote controls and process facility. Testing is the initial step for any engineer to carry out before installing the system into his application. This project explains the testing and interconnection process between Nema 42 close loop with its hydride driver and controlled through simple Arduino uno board.

Supplies

  1. Nema 42 stepper motor
  2. Hybrid driver
  3. Arduino Uno
  4. Electric wires
  5. Jumper links

Step 1: Introduction

The aim of this project is to demonstrate the testing and interconnection between the Nema 42 stepper motor and its hybrid driver. The Nema 42 stepper motor is a big motor that can produce 20NM of force, for this reason the selection process of this type should be studied in depth.

These motors are used a lot in the automation field due to its speed, force and accuracy, the testing of this stepper is build on my pervious topic (https://www.instructables.com/Simple-Integration-Between-Stepper-Motor-Nema-23-a/ )

Step 2: Interconnection

The connection of the circuit is explained in the video, first is connection between the electric power and the driver. Second is the connection between the stepper and the driver. Third is the connection between the driver and the Arduino (as in the table).

Step 3: Finally

Power on the driver and wait for the driver to start, then press on button number one this will trigger the driver to rotate the stepper motor in a clock wise direction (slow rotation mode). Next press on button number two and notice the change in direction of the stepper motor rotation. The driver monitors in its front LCD the speed and direction of the stepper motor, additionally the driver can be manipulated to set different parameters to control the stepper, all of these information are explained in the data sheet of the driver.
