Introduction: Cookie Mix in a Mason Jar

A lot of my friends love homemade cookies, but don't have the time (or the patience) to measure the ingredients out to make them. So, for the holidays, I put together Cookie Mix in a Mason Jar. The tag includes the recipe on one side for chocolate chip cookies, and the baking instructions on the other.

Step 1: Procure Ingredients

You will need:

1 3/4 C all-purpose flour

3/4 tsp baking soda

3/4 tsp salt

1 1/2 C (9 oz) semi-sweet chocolate morsels

3/4 C packed brown sugar

1/2 C granulated sugar

1 quart-sized mason jar

I had a jar funnel which made getting the ingredients (especially the flour) into the jar much easier. I also used a wooden dowel to pack the ingredients after each step.

Step 2: Layer the Ingredients

Start by measuring and pouring the flour into the jar. Add the baking soda and salt, and mix together. Use a wooden dowel (or the back of a wooden spoon if you prefer) to pack the flour down. Add the chocolate chips. Add the brown sugar, packing again after you pour it in. Lastly, add the granulated sugar and pack that down as well.

Step 3: Attach Recipe Card and Marvel at Your Gift-giving Ability!

Preheat oven to 375°F. Beat 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) softened butter or margarine, 1 large egg, and 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract in large mixer bowl until blended. Add cookie mix and 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional); mix well, breaking up any clumps. Drop by rounded tablespoon onto ungreased baking sheets. Bake for 9 to 11 minutes or until golden brown. Cool on baking sheets for 2 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely. Makes about 2 dozen cookies.
