In good upcycling fashion, I had some extra corks hanging around the house that I hadn't gotten rid of yet, so I decided to try to make some awesome cork coasters with the supplies I had hanging around.

Step 1: Supplies

Here is what I used to create my cork coasters

Used wine corks

Exacto Knife

Hot Glue

Step 2: Cut Cork

I started by cutting the corks into 1/4" thick pieces. One of the best ways I have found to cut a cork is to put constant pressure on the exacto knife while spinning the cork underneath. This will cut the cork pieces evenly for the most part, as long as you keep the exacto knife straight. I was able to get 6 pieces from each cork.

Step 3: Arrange Pieces

Once I had all the pieces I wanted I tried out different designs to arrange them in a cool pattern. After a few tries I settled on this square pattern. Some patterns require more or less pieces of cork.

At this time I also make sure that all of the pieces were of equal or close to equal height so that the glass wouldn't wobble.

Step 4: Glue Cork Coaster

I then glued the pattern together using hot glue.

Other glues would work if you are worried about the glue keeping the corks together. Gorilla glue and rubber cement are good alternatives but they will take longer to dry.
